Isn’t that how all fairy tales start?
With a witty line, a beautiful princess in need of saving and a dashing prince.
…except in our case, I’m not very dashing, and you’re not exactly complacent or trapped in a tricky situation - in fact, if anything, you save me a lot more than I would ever you, as much as I hate to admit it. We were, after all, never the fairy tale couple you had wanted us to be.
I’ve always looked up to you, basked in the shadow you cast. When you’d do something crazy, I’d go along with it. If you’d criticize me, I’d take it.
Because that’s the kind of prince I wanted to be - valiant and yet submissive, to your wild and uncontainable, beautiful and free soul. The down-to-earth prince, to the winged, heroic, lady - once upon a time.
But ‘Once Upon a Time’ is all long and gone, and ‘Once Upon a Time’ is all we’ll ever be to you.
To you, the idea of us hit ‘The End’ a long, long time ago.
You’ve gone on to taller princes, more handsome probably, and stronger by far.
You’ve gone on to newer adventures, newer courts and bigger castles in wider skies.
But not me.
I’m still here, between the hills and sunrise.
Hand on reins, sword unsheathed.
Ready to ride for you, to fight for you.
If only you should call.
