An Internet Book Survey.

As lordjulius points out, this list has clearly been fan-edited as it makes its way around the internet (check out the pairings of 14 vs 98 or 33 vs 36). Nevertheless, it's amusing to fill out. Some folks on facebook have tagged me so I thought I'd go for it.

Wow. It was easier to count the "no"'s.

My high school made us read a lot of classics. :) I'm actually surprised that more people don't have at least 50% of this list just from forced school reading.

Here's some bragging: Two of the above books I have read in French, although Les Miserables was an abridged edition. Again, that was all for school; my voluntary reading in French was almost entirely Tintin comics.

Oh, and Asterix.

Ike has been getting into my (English) Asterix comics and demanding that I read them to him. He doesn't get so many of the horrible puns, but he likes watching Obelix whomp on everything around. I'd feel bad about all of the violence, but he already memorized my Complete Spy vs. Spy collection, so it's too late to worry about that.

I agree that this list is wrong, seriously BBC bets I haven't read "The Time Traveler's wife"? You are right BBC! and I won't because I doubt there is much value in it. Sorry for the rant, I hate Oprah's pics from working so many years in a bookstore.

Anyway, the reason I am commenting is to recommend "Cold Comfort Farm" by Stella Gibbons. Both the book and the movie. i mean if you like charming things.

Ugh, no! Not something charming! I hate charming things! *laugh*

I found the original list -- it was a list of favorites, not "must reads," and it was published in 2003:

Oh, I see, some of the books that are not popular in the US got replaced. Makes sense. I don't mind the current version, reading memes are fun.

I was going to say that I don't remember which of these books I read in school (except Gatsby), but I'm sure it was most of these "classics" of "great" American "literature".
