Thanks for the pointer. Alas, I read the tv.com recaps of both parts and it has no mention of the PhDs there. (Which of course doesn't mean they aren't mentioned in the episode itself.) It does say (Part 1) that Reid's mother, Diana, was a professor of "15th Century literature".
Thanks for the link -- and the article also contains a link for Matthew's blog -- which is -- mindboggling! I'm not sure if he's updating it any more but I'm glad I got to see it.
It's possible that in the years since the show started they readjusted what the PhDs are in to fit his character and the show -- I suspect they are leaving it loose on purpose. I shouldn't be so obsessed with The Facts! *g*
if I had to take a scientific wild-ass guess, I would suspect #3 psycholinguistics, as he is obviously the team expert in this (The Fisher King, The Last Word, Fear & Loathing, others). [this was actually truepenny's idea, not mine.]
It can't be psychology, because he has to get Gideon to do a psych eval of miniReid in "Sex Birth Death."
Interesting point. It'll be interesting to see all these eps again. That Seattle (?) one is on tonight, with the building/bomb. I don't remember it as particularly interesting, but there may be tidbits!
Hey, I've been wondering this too! I only just got into criminal minds it was on 5us one night (either before or after csi!) and I watched it and fell in love! I managed to buy the 1st series box set last week (it was only £27!) and found the ep i saw was ep 2! I totally love Reid and I can't figure out how he has 3 phds aged 24. Even though he's a genius that's a hell of a lot of work (or are they faster to do in the US? it generally takes 5 years minimum here) I thought it would be cool if he had an MD and 2 PhDs rather than 3 PhDs but a MD takes 8/9+ years.
Turns out they've never mentioned what any of Reid's PhDs are in, probably wisely! Lets him roam over all kinds of knowledge without having to prove real expertise. I'm rather glad they didn't attempt to give him an MD, because you're right about how long that takes -- many other kinds can be speeded through, being mainly just studying and doing papers or whatnot, but the MD takes years of hands-on internship and residency -- and what would be the point if he knew he was just going to go into the FBI at the end of it? (It's established in a later season that this was his aim all along.)
It's also established that he started college (university) at the age of 12, which explains some of how he got it all done so fast. :-)
If you like reading the fanfic, you can find tons at bau_fic. Mine is there and also in my LJ memories (under Criminal Minds). Rushlight's fic is some I've also found enjoyable.
12! Gosh that does make it more possible got get through 3 PhDs fast! I just started uni this year but I could never imagine starting at 12! Although as lng as he had the knoweledge he could have easilly fitted my whole BSc degree into a year or so because it's all examined! And we know how fast he reads!
Thanks fo the fic links, I'm a total fan fic maniac! And Reid is just too pretty not to slash!
I'm staking out as many comms as I can find today, I've got a free day an no work to do!
