Why am I falling apart?

Feb 17, 2012 09:51

Since retirement my body seems to have decided to go on the fritz. A couple of months in, my back started hurting big time, and my knee started to get worse again. Unsurprisingly, instead of losing weight due to reduced stress, I started to gain it due to increased sitting on my butt watching TV or playing with the PC ( Read more... )

My sympathies -- quite literally. :) My knees are shot as well, due to my weight issues, and even regular housework, like ironing, is quite beyond me at this time. (Aren't I lucky we can afford to give my laundry out to be ironed *wry grin*)

Anyway, I really ought to exercise, too, but it has to be something that won't strain my joints, so it's basically exercise machines like ikes/rowing machines etc (in other words, visit a gym) and swimming -- which I can't do because my bloody arm hurts too much. *sigh* I'm even grateful that my pants fit a bit more loosely!

I had the final consultation with the "Fat Surgeon" today; they'll be forwarding my records to my insurance company next. Then it's up to them to either approve or deny the request. Argh!

good luck with your further weight loss, and well done so far!

Thanks! And good luck with the insurance company. With the problems you're having due to weight, you'd think there's no question about approving the surgery, but of course they love to cut costs.

There's a show here called "My 600 Pound Life" about gastric surgery patients - the two subjects I've seen so far really went through a lot with the operation and aftermath and had many dangerous issues, but they both said in the end that they're glad they did it and would do it again.

First of all, I think that working out 30 minutes to an hour six days a week is definitely spectacular in my eyes. My new year's resolution was to get on the treadmill 30 min 3/4 times a week, and I already can't keep that up.
Secondly, I'm happy to see you keeping busy. Are you also going to some WW meetings?
Thirdly, why are we not keeping in touch more? We should try to chat on Yahoo, like we used to. I'll try to be on this weekend in the evenings (after 9pm). Maybe we can meet up! :)
HUGS from Dany

LOL, I think chasing after three young children counts as hours of exercise per week! Your problem is lack of time, not lack of activity. :)

I know! We hardly seem to be in touch now. Since I have plenty of time maybe I could visit at long last. I seem to remember I'd have to take a commuter railroad out of DC to where you are, or maybe fly into the Baltimore airport? Or am I confused?

Arg, in the stress of dealing with a very sick cat I totally forgot about IM. (He's much better now.) Also I don't even have the IM program installed anymore. Are you on Facebook or could you sign up? FB has a nice IM feature that works in the browser and doesn't require any installation.

<3 <3 <3 Feel better in general, and the knee specifically I hope improves. No pool nearby you could use for lap-swimming (for the zero impact)? One point per pound lost, though. :P You're doing well. :)

Thanks so much! Knee is stable for the moment and I'm trying to increase my walking endurance again. There's no pool nearby that I'm aware of - square footage is at a premium in NYC and pools tend to be expensive. Good idea, though!

Walking endurance is actually a pretty good thing to go for with a sometimes-bad knee, I think (I don't actually KNOW, but it seems good).

I'm totally used to seeing pools in the majority of the gyms and fitness centers around here, so. Good luck with walking endurance, though, you'll do fine. :)
