I've worked a lot this week. Today's hassle: fighting with LDAP from 9pm to 11:30. I missed a Cork outing with txgreengoddess and ruato, because I was screaming at a yast dialog box. Tomorrow and Saturday will be the UT visit; then Sunday apparently I will work much of the day. I'm tired. I have this theory that when I get to grad school, my professional ( Read more... )

Unless you object seriously, I'm going to take this and
permanently post it on my web site.

However..."I have this theory that when I get to grad school..."
That's a hypothesis, not a theory. A theory should have some
evidence to back it up. Let me suggest that you hope for
(eventual) convergence, rather than parallelism....

That's awesome. I'll send you an html version. Will you attribute it?

Well, I was actually using the people I know in grad school as examples, so I wouldn't say there's no data. Although I grant the similarity measure is uncertain.

I too am sorry you missed Cork outing, too :( However, I do believe we decided to make another trip, so you can call do-overs :)

Yeah. And to miss it because I was working was the outside of too much! But that's okay; soon Everything Will Be Different. :-) (I hope.)

This is really the one that I have the biggest problem with, too. I understand the danger of misunderstandings, but that doesn't go away in the same language either (e.g. if people use idioms in peculiar ways).

Good technical English is very hard; the studied simplicity that is considered good style since the Royal Academy of Sciences sounds juvenile and condescending in many other Indo-European languages.

I proof a good number of the English articles and proposals that my friends at the Theology Department back home write; I am pretty much the closest thing to a native speaker that they can get access to [no, this is not an attempt to fish for compliments]. I suspect that the situation is the same in the research centers of many other countries in the world.

I think reviewers whose native language is the submission language should just thank their lucky stars that they dont have to read it in the submitter's native language and keep going.

Guh. I wrote a long response to this and then my browser crashed. I will recreate it sometime soon.

This has almost nothing to do with the awesomeness of the suggestions, which I dont blama shakati for posting on his website, but I wonder when "drooling moron" will become politically unacceptable.

Thatr's because she attended Cyc 101 a few years ago, among other reasons. :-)
