If I only had a year, my behavior would probably reflect it by shortening my goals. If I had meant to accomplish something in ten years, the deadline is now one, and I've therefore got to do it faster. If this is impossible, the goal would be moot and I would cease to focus on it.

Out of curiosity, are you in such a situation?

Interesting. But I would say that we as individuals in an industrialized society center ourselves around goals which would most likely not be attainable in 1 year (get a well paying job, which requires an education, get a mate and make a family, which more often than not requires said well paying job, etc, etc) so realistically speaking beyond the more obscure internal long term goals (more specifically those which are inexpensive) what does that really leave to do?

As for your question, not exactly (or not yet depending on outlook). Basically, I had a minor stroke a few weeks back and the subsequent doctors appointments from that are bringing in the looming possibility of something more serious. That said, this questions has pretty consistently plagued my thinking for most of my life it's just a bit more important to answer it now.

Microcosms or simulacra of the longer-term goals. Try get-rich-quick schemes, or have flings, whirlwind romances, casual sex, etc. Hone a skill just for the hell of it. Write a book. You know, absurd stuff that would waste resources but be fun, since resources aren't an issue if you die. Of course, I'd say be sure you're going to die first, but then again, if you don't die, and the book/relationships/get-rich-quick schemes end up working out, all the better, right?

And wow, a stroke at your age? Tough freakin' break, man. Hopefully said looming possibility is just doctors playing it safe.

Oh, good point. Even if you can't be a superhero, you could always Evel Knievel it up and do all kinds of dangerous shit, what dying not being as much of an issue and all.

I could give a nice philosophical answer, but this one seems like a good idea. But why stop at bad guys? If you're going to go out anyways, might as well make it a much more entertaining end.

See, that's the thing, it really does sound like a good idea when thinking about it. But then that brings one to the question of, well, why bother on a normal day? what's stopping that anarchistic/hedonistic outlook from taking over?
