Like you say, I suppose it's just not feasible to tighten gun laws and stop people owning them once they've got used to it - or maybe it'd be possible very gradually over time if trust built in communities, rather like the hope for nuclear arms decommissioning.
Over here there are lots of restrictions on owning a firearm - very few people do, so related deaths are low. In 2009 42 people died of gun-related injuries. Then again, there's more knife crime, possibly. The year before, 277 people died from stabbings in England and Wales alone. I guess people use what weapons they can if they need. :-( Nasty, but still, at least it's harder to stab multiple people in one go before being stopped.
Sounds like you're doing a sensible thing in exposing your kids to firearms in a safe manner in the future. At least then they'll be informed if they come into contact with them, too.
