Kurt had offered to help him pack up his apartment, and even though he knew it was a terrible idea, he had agreed. For one thing, Kurt had yet to actually pick up a single item, but was continually correcting him about where to put each box and how to label it. He had also been holding Hannah for about an hour, inhaling her baby smell and talking to her as if she would forget him the second they left.

He had taken about a hundred pictures before Noah had even been able to start packing. And he had been on the verge of tears since the day two weeks ago when Noah had revealed he was leaving.

The funny thing was that Kurt thought that he was being completely subtle about the whole thing. In the three years that they had known each other, Kurt had never, ever, succeeded in being subtle about anything. Sure, he had managed to hide his crush on Finn from Finn himself, but then again Finn was terrible at reading people.

Noah knew it was hard on Kurt, considering how close the two of them had become since Hannah’s birth. When he had joined glee in his junior year, he had trying to get closer to Quinn and look out for his baby, but he would have never expected that the small prissy kid he used to throw in garbage cans would end up being one of his best friends.

It was different than being best friends with Finn. With Finn, they played football, talked about girls, and occasionally partied after a big game. The “chilled” and watched sports on TV and went to action movies. But, from the beginning, his friendship with Kurt had been different, Kurt just expected more. Kurt was content to watch TV or a movie, but he also wanted to know how Noah was feeling and what he dreamed about doing in the future. He encouraged Noah to keep playing the guitar and challenged him to make something of his life.

Maybe it was having Hannah that had made all the difference, maybe it was her that had changed him, but Noah liked to think he could have eventually become friends with Kurt no matter the circumstances.

Kurt also understood a lot more about him than their other friends. The other glee kids might babysit Hannah once in a while, but most had no idea how hard he worked to make sure he had all the things she needed or how much work a baby could be. The others saw her grew up, but Kurt knew when she had gotten a new tooth or learned how to walk.

He knew it was somewhat selfish of him to do this to Kurt. He knew Kurt was devastated by this sudden change in the status quo, but it wasn’t exactly like he could say no, especially after Kurt’s father had told him that Kurt was looking at schools around Lima for college, instead of New York or LA. He knew that if he stayed in Lima he would be holding Kurt back, and he couldn’t let that happen.

It was also hard to say no to that much of a pay raise. He was extremely thankful to Kurt’s dad for hiring him like he did. For giving him flexible hours and patiently training him everything he knew about cars. But eventually, he would have wanted to start his own shop, and Lima was too small of a town for two Auto Repair Shops. Cincinnati would give him opportunity to learn more and the chance to work on his music.

But looking at Kurt, clutching Hannah with a face full of unshed tears, he was tempted to give it all up. But he was doing this as much for himself as for Kurt, even if Kurt didn’t realize it yet. So he chooses to look away and focus on the packing. Because if he looks in those blue eyes too long, he might be forced to stay.
