That is a bummer! I have never had that happen, whenever I have had a flat it has happened while I was parked and I have generally noticed it before I drive.
Now, in the Mini I have run flat tires- meaning (I think) that when they lose air, they don't go flat right away and a light indicator warns me that I have a imbalance in my tire pressure. This has come in handy once, my tire was almost empty due to a slow leak, but it still 'looked' full. I was able to refill it, get home and have it looked at the next day.
