Has that author ever seen a marmot? Because pardon me, but I have trouble thinking of this guy racing anywhere.

I know, right? I always imagine marmots as being more like ferrets than they actually are, but I blame that on that one scene in The Big Lebowski--she doesn't have that excuse since her book was written well before that movie was released.

What's even worse about this is that the book is supposed to make an ecofeminist argument and involves the main characters living for over a year in the forest. The marmot bit is even more jarring to me in that context.

How did they deal with their periods? It drives me crazy when novels that are supposed to be all nature-woman don't address that. I cannot be the only person who thinks about that stuff when a book talks about spending even two weeks away from modern conveniences.

Hmm...she didn't really deal with that. They did have a cabin and running water, so I guess I just assumed they'd deal with such things in familiar ways.
