You know, looking at the Arizona immigration law, I think the problem isn't that they run IDs against the immigration database, it's that they do it selectively. This is America, where we randomly select grannies at the airport for additional checks; why? To be equal protection about it. So run everyone's ID on traffic stops. An essay on sci-fi morality.
Sci-fi writers are not open to all views, or with an advanced perspective on things. Sci-fi writers are often the exact opposite. Sci-fi allows one to make a specific argument obvious when it is not so much so in the actual world. For the record, I'm in favor of ending the filibuster. I was in favor of ending it when Republicans called "ending it" "the nuclear option" and the Democrats called it the end of civilization and the death of puppies.
