Well, think how crazy you might personally be for say Mayday? I guess it's the same isn't it.
Moreover, Harry Potter has its credits for exploring universal themes (ie love, fear, hate...) and stereotypical characters recognizable in real life. Plus the enchantment of magic (I believe many are drawn to Harry Potter partly due to its surreal, dreamy and idealistically magically world. Esp if you do not consider You-know-who. For example, they have Transformation as a subject! Doesn't that sound a little more exciting than that we have in our math syllabus?) and a little bit of humour, it is an engaging read.
