I went to Carmax cuz my sister had a good experience selling a car to them, and some reviews online were really positive. I wasn't expecting bluebook or anything, but I was hoping it'd be closer. I think most dealers just do trade-in buys (and from what I hear, that's the source of the bulk of their profit).

I'm sure the recession is a *big* part of it. People can't afford as much, and dealers know they can get away with offering less. I'm hoping for SB's affluence to serve me well, but then the affluent probably aren't interested in a Civic. We shall see!

your mileage may vary : Exactly!

I've heard uniformly terrible things about their service department, and lots of conflicting info about their sales. But it seems like most of the people who sell TO them find it a good experience. It was easy, but I still feel like they were lowballing me.

Lots of people actually report receiving more than bluebook from 'em. Just not me, boohoo.
