Another "word" questions.

Postulate that I'm writing some direct speach, and I want to represent the normal contraction for "I would have". Would I write "I'd've"? If so, why have I seen it so rarely? And if not, then what ( Read more... )

I'd go for "I'd've", but I suspect many writers are wary of the double apostrophe and go for "I'd have" instead, for saftety.

We have a mild frost forecast for Friday...

Quite a lot of leaves still on the trees but mostly gold now. Not quite the same season you're experiencing I suspect...

I would go with the simpler "I've" contracting further. The would/should/could is understood.
Thus:
"I would have thought so, anyway."
"I've thought so, anyway"

If written, then I go with Gill's "I'd have thought so, anyway".

I'd probably chicken out and write "I would've". However, "I'd've" has got to be correct technically, although it looks ugly. Nothing wrong with multiple apostrophes, consider "fo'c's'le".

Just wet here in Kent, no frost at all yet. We haven't seen much snow in the past few years.
