Trying to make saving roll against shiny

As a colleague of mine discovered yesterday evening, O2 and Carphone Warehouse have reduced the price of an iPhone to free for the 8GB model on the £35 monthly tariff. Since my brick-like HTC phone is getting increasingly unreliable, I'm very tempted. May pop into the local shop to see what they have in stock.

Does the UK have free choice of service provider for iPhone, or are you stuck with whoever got the contract with Apple?

No, O2 have the exclusive contract for thr iPhone in the UK, and though there are resellers such as Carphone Warephouse who also offer it, you end up on the same network, and paying the same price.

The latter, in our case O2. The £35 rate is for a two-year contract, unless the rules have been changed since I signed up.

Dunno about the £35 rate, but the (just under) £30 rate was for 18 months minimum term, about three weeks ago.

Personally, I found that the £30 rate was sufficient for my needs, given how many texts I send, and how rarely I make phone calls.

I think the £30 contract and the 18 month contracts are for upgrades only, though that is just going by the information on the web site. As is turns out I'm not going to be able to do anything about it for a couple of weeks, LX and a trip to the USA are going to get in the way, so I have time to think about it.

I was new to O2 (moving from Orange), so didn't count as an upgrade.
