Looking for a less evil Kindle alternative

I really like my Kindle, it is robust, simple, a good basic dedicated e-reader, but I'm getting fed up of feeling like I'm dealing with a sleazy black-marketeer rather than a responsible retailer every time I buy an ebook from Amazon. I love my kobo including the stupid but cute reward badges it gives you for reading :)

Also you can mail the kobo shop and they get books they don't have onto the shelves for you if they can

Their search system is somewhat pants however. Do not search for anything even remotely NSFW interpretable in public, is it littered with self pulished pron and no filtering mechanism.
