So I moved to a small town a few months ago and got DSL service through a smallish local provider. Then I went on about my business. Tonight, though, I got a call from them, observing that I had downloaded the season premiere of the Sopranos and that I needed to delete it because it is copyright-protected by a company who has the will and the ( Read more... )

I am reading a 15-chapter WIP Akame fic, wtf? coco_palmolive April 14 2007, 14:11:22 UTC
I really think it's the small size of my provider and the new aggressiveness of HBO. I downloaded all of the previous season on another municipal ISP back in Iowa and never heard a word of complaint. Another thing too is that the file I got was a critic's screener that was posted in advance of the premiere, and I'm wondering if maybe it's this file in particular they're pissed off about. There's a chance I may hear from my ISP again in the next few days concerning another Sopranos download I completed about 24 hours after the first. If I don't, then it must be this file, rather than a scorched-earth assault by HBO.

It is the creepy self-insert director one where she makes them kiss in front of her, isn't it? It's okay, you can tell me, I finished all 15 chapters today.

Of course it is. I have only made it through five chapters so far, but I think this is possibly one of the greatest slash stories ever told. Aside from the fact that it is kind of illiterate.

Were they friendly, when they talked to you? Or were they outright threatening?

Somewhere in between. They took care not to assign blame or try to make me feel guilty about the fact that ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING IS ILLEGAL, but they said there were repercussions for them as an ISP for allowing it and they therefore were very aggressive in enforcement, and it was implied I would be very sorry if it happened again.

i think an eye patch would be sort of sexy on you. i was going to ask, would you want someone to rename and compress and upload big media files for you, but who knows how they're monitoring what you download? that's CREEPY, goddamn. i don't like this one bit. :-w

That would be kind of awesome except that, you're right, who knows what they're looking for -- large downloads of any kind? Now that I have A Strike Against Me, I feel like they're probably looking at every web page I visit right now, and are even now snickering over the fact that I am reading ESL Japanese boy-band porn.

Welcome to George Bush's America. Although I like to believe that the feds stopped monitoring my phone calls a few days back, when I said that the President is smarter than a lot of Americans. Which is probably the nicest thing anyone has said about him in months.
