Tiny Ficlet....

Brr....it's chilly outside. Not quite as bad as it's been, but I've still got the chills. Which means I was cooped up all day. Which means that I actually wrote something. It's tiny and well, I haven't written anything in a long time, so.... ;D

Title: Cooped Up
Rated: G
Characters: Frodo and wee!Pippin

Pippin’s feet were kicking madly as he stared out the frost-covered window. He smiled as his breath left cloudy patches on the glass, and he continued to puff air on every part of the window that he could reach. He quickly grew bored, however, and turned impatiently to his older cousin.

“Frodo, why can’t I go outside? Look at all that snow!”

“I’ve told you, Pippin; it’s far too cold today. You could get very sick.”

“But I’ll wear my jacket...and my hat!”

“That’s not going to do you any good right now. This is the coldest winter the Shire has seen in quite some time. Can’t you find something else to do?”

The young hobbit leapt off of the bench he had been seated on and ran to the large window across the room. “I’ll bet I could make a hundred snowhobbits with all that snow! And there could be a snowball fight...you could play, too. I could make a tunnel...or a fort, yeah, a big fort! Or...or...please?”

Frodo closed his eyes wearily and sighed. Sam had come in to work earlier that day, rosy-cheeked and shivering, warning them of the dangerous temperatures. Frodo had sent him back home before the weather got worse and hadn’t seen a soul outside since. The gardener’s footprints leading up the hill were already long gone, covered with a thick layer of heavy snow from this seemingly never-ending storm. Frodo had built up a fire in the hearth and was relaxing comfortably in a chair near it.

Pippin’s face appeared suddenly, eyes silently begging. “Pippin...”

“Please?”

Frodo shook his head, and then paused as an idea began to form. “I’ll tell you what...we’ll make a fort.”

“Really?”

“Mm-hm.”

“A big fort?”

“Of course.” Frodo got up and kneeled so he was eye-level with Pippin. His voice was low. “We don’t want those trolls to see us, do we?” Pippin’s eyes grew wide with excitement as he glanced suspiciously around. He pressed a small index finger against Frodo’s lips.

“No. But shh...they might hear us.” Pippin’s voice was a whisper. Frodo winked and gestured behind him.

“We’d better get started on that fort, then.”

--------------------

After throwing a few more logs on the crackling fire, Frodo returned to his chair and stretched contentedly. The snow was still coming down outside, though it was considerably darker and, Frodo assumed, colder.

“Frodo?” Pippin’s face came into view from behind the folds of a blanket. “Is it all clear? I mean, of danger...” Frodo looked around, and then gave his cousin a serious nod. The little hobbit crawled out from under a blanket that had been draped over the couch and a series of stacked pillows and jumped up onto the chair next to the older hobbit. “Do you like my fort?” Frodo smiled down at the mess of blankets, pillows, and cushions that had been strategically set up before him.

“Yes, Pippin. It’s wonderful.”

“And you know what’s better about this than building one with snow?

“What?”

“Well, snow forts melt and disappear. This one can stay here forever!”

“We’ll have to see about that, Pippin.” Frodo laughed and adjusted his bouncy cousin on his lap. “We’ll have to see.”

Thanks for reading!

Anyway, we've gotten quite a bit of snow today. We were only expected to get a dusting, but we actually have another 3 or so inches added onto the snow we already had. *sighs* I love snow....it makes everything so pretty.

Watched "Little Miss Sunshine" last night with my family. It wasn't as funny as I had expected it to be, but it was alright (the ending was pretty funny, though.)

Off to make some dinner. :)
