Mark shifted uncomfortably on the lumpy sofa. The bell to first hour rang shrilly from the hall. The receptionist was clicking away furiously at her computer, not paying him any attention. The sounds of his future schoolmates hurrying to get their things, chatting, and going to class swam through the walls.

Mark was a trouble child. Or at least, that was what his parent’s said when they got him enrolled here. That was partially true, but the fights weren’t his fault. Not from his point of view anyway. The other parties were always the ones to instigate the fight, but no one believes the notorious “trouble child”.

His parent’s moved him from his old school and sent him to live with his Uncle, thinking he might be a good influence. They were really just tired of dealing with him. He didn’t blame them; he was tired of dealing with that school. And his uncle was cool enough.
Mark looked at his parent’s exhaustion as a blessing of sorts. It was a new town, new people, and new teachers. He hadn’t really had any friends at his old school, so that didn’t matter to him.

The sounds outside quieted and the receptionist looked up at him. “Mr. Emerson?” She asked, surprisingly soft.
Mark hurriedly stood, “Um, yes that’s me.” Not that there was anyone else in the barren room. She smiled and handed him a slip of paper.

“This is your schedule. If there’s any problem just sign up on that list by the door for a meeting.” She said.
Mark grabbed the slip, “thank you.” He was suddenly nervous. What if this school wasn’t any different? People were people no matter where you went. But they didn’t have to know. This time he would keep his secret a secret.

Mark let out a nervous breath as his hand grasped the door. It was a new school. This was his new beginning. He wasn’t going to mess it up.
