Changmin feels as though the walls are closing in on him, as though they’re going to collapse any second and bury him alive.
“NO!” is the only word he can utter. His emotions have been reduced to ribbons littered at their feet. “NO!”
He knows Jaejoong’s motive: despite his strong façade, Yunho’s condition is deteriorating. He’s in dire need of medical attention for a full diagnosis to be made. In addition to that, they’ve all gotten so thin that Changmin fears they’re all going to disappear. Jaejoong’s actions are an act of desperation, he knows, but he also knows how his father acts and thinks. For a taut moment, he’s reduced to silence, sudden black fear paralyzing him.
“You fool! It’s a trap! It’s a fucking trap!” He shouts at Jaejoong, his voice uncharacteristically breaking under the strain. Jaejoong looks back at him, shocked, obviously not expecting a response like he’d given. He winces as the older man grips his shoulders, fingers digging into his skin.
“What…in fuck’s sake are you talking about?” There’s unwavering control in Jaejoong’s voice, but the trepidation in his words are tangible enough for Changmin to nearly choke on.
“My father…he’s a powerful man. He runs on image! God, he’s a fucking politician! If word gets out that I ran away…that I ran away because of family problems, he’ll be destroyed.”
Changmin doesn’t know if he should feel relieved or not when all color disappears from Jaejoong’s face and he doesn’t need to explain further. His arms drop solidly to his sides and he stumbles backward. Suddenly there’s bile rising up their throats and terror weighing down on their limbs.
“Fuck…oh fuck…they’re going to frame us. For fucking kidnapping.”
The words send a chill to Changmin’s spine. If they get caught they’ll be sent to jail. His stomach turns at the thought. Yoochun would never get his chance to go to school. Junsu would never find his family. Yunho could possibly die.
“You have to go, you have to escape.” Changmin is frantic now, and his mind is whizzing at a fantastic rate. He feels as though he’s run a mile, even though he’s stayed in the same spot for the past ten or so minutes. “They can’t catch you here. Any of you. You have to go. You have to go!”
“They’d have surrounded the fucking building right now!” Jaejoong is white as a ghost and his hands are visibly shaking as they rake through his hair. We’re trapped, is the first thing that Changmin can think of, but he refuses the thought, shaking it away angrily as though it were one of his bad dreams.
This isn’t going to end like this. No, NOTHING is going to end.
“Changmin…Changmin-ah,” Jaejoong is sincere to him for the first time. His hands touch Changmin’s arm imploringly. “Even if we escape we’ll have no place to stay. It’s the dead of winter…we’ll die.”
Fear is present in every single detail in Jaejoong’s face, and he looks at Changmin as though he would have the power to somehow do something. Changmin knows he would probably feel the same way; Jaejoong is on the brink of losing everything he has all over again.
“I can’t lose them.”
“You won’t, hyung-”
There’s a thundering of footsteps coming up the stairs, then seconds after, a loud banging on the door.
“POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR!”
Changmin gives Jaejoong a look. There’s no time.
“Hyung, you have to go-!”
He doesn’t think. For the moment there is no big world awaiting him, only the small cramped fishbowl of an apartment he’s been sharing with four other men who’ve wormed their way into his heart, and whom he knows now matter so much more to him than his own desires. He reaches down, gets his money from his backpack and presses it into Jaejoong’s palm.
“That’s all I have. Take my clothes, take everything, just please go-”
What sounds like an entire army of Spartans outside their door makes the walls shake, and for a second, both are afraid the entire building is going to collapse from the ruckus.
“Changmin-ah…” Jaejoong looks as though he’s about to choke, an expression Changmin is sure he would have laughed at should they be in an entirely different situation.
“Now, hyung!” he shouts, leaving no room for any protests. He grabs onto Jaejoong’s arm, a brave move; surprisingly, Jaejoong doesn’t swat it away as he is prone to do. “Promise me you’ll tell me if you guys make it out okay.”
The coldness disappears. “You little f-”
“PROMISE ME.” He can’t stand the thought of never knowing whether they’ll be all right or not. The thought that he hasn’t said any proper goodbyes or thank yous kill him, but he knows he’d have to do without. I’m sorry, he says, pleads, to the image of Yoochun, Yunho and Junsu in his head, his throat threatening to strangle him.
“YES you demanding little fuck, yes!” Jaejoong exclaims which satisfies Changmin wholly. He gives the older man a shove in the direction of the window. Jaejoong looks back once, his teeth biting down on his lip as though keeping himself from crying. He looks younger now, vulnerable and frightened. A boy, Changmin realizes with a pang, not a man.
“Changmin-ah I’m sorry-”
The door is broken down and crashes to the floor, releasing a thin cloud of dust and a sudden burst of air at their feet. Changmin immediately throws his hands up as a large group of heavily armed men rush into the apartment, surrendering in the hopes that they would let Jaejoong (and the others, should they be encountered) go free.
“Don’t hurt him,” he attempts to reason, his voice reduced to that of a child’s. “Don’t hurt any of them. I give up-”
A sharp whizzing cuts through the air and something pricks his neck, freezing his words before they spill out of his mouth. His arms and legs immediately lose feeling and he falls as though in slow motion.
“CHANGMIN-AH!”
His vision is distorted and blurred, the apartment suddenly unrecognizable. All he understands is the chaos that has gripped the room and fright that has seized his chest.
“Stop right there-”
Changmin is unconscious before he hits the floor.
