I was like... "what???"tang_yongyuJuly 7 2005, 14:57:38 UTC
I was confused today. You know, Tanabata is based on a Chinese holiday. But Japanese people use the Western calender instead of the lunar calender so in Japan it is on July 7th. For people in China, 七夕 happens on August 11 this year. That is the time that the stars will meet. So when people were telling me about a Chinese holiday happening to day and that I should look to the sky tonight, I was asking "What Chinese holiday?" and "Why? Nothing special happens until August 11."
Yu-chan was shocked and a little sad when he checked and learned I was right. But, I think that for most people July 7th is easier because the lunar calender is difficult for gaijin to read. Everytime I try to explain how they just get confused.

I just recently learned about Tanabata! According to Genji Monogatari (the story we are reading in Japanese Literature) Princess Tanabata and her lover, a Herdsman, would meet annually on the seventh day of the seventh month.
