Name: Megamind
Movie/series: Megamind
Year/Position: Teacher
Non-Speaking Animal Companion(if any): Brainbots. Just a couple. Really.
Powers(if any): His fantastically enormous, impressively amazing and over-powering intellect.
Canon history:
Here!AU history: Megamind is caught up to the death of Metro Man, and the celebratory city-decimation that followed.
For weeks, he had been sitting in the mayor’s office, surrounded by filthy, glorious lucre, staring out the fantastic invention that is a window. Metrocity was his. Evil had prevailed. Justice was dead. This was everything he had ever wanted...
It started as boredom. Eventually, they ran out of buildings to vandalize, precious artifacts to steal or destroy--there were only so many banks to rob, warehouses to ransack. People to terrorize.
And he wasn’t happy. He was miserable. Melon-coh-lee, even, and he didn’t know why. It was after watching a newscast by one Roxanne Ritchi, he truly let it hit him. The game was over. Metro Man was dead. Megamind realized he no longer had a purpose. There was no one to oppose him, no good to rise up, and he had nothing but a city full of frightened people. After hearing her heartfelt words about the fallen hero, he decided to pay a visit to the Metro Man museum...and say goodbye.
After giving the large effigy his last respects--and a bundle of yellow roses--, he wandered to the lobby to check on the explosives the Brainbots were fixing to the base structure. Coming to the front doors of the museum, he found a letter taped to the glass. With his name.
For the longest time, he stood outside, reading the invitation over and over, greatly torn. Metrocity had been all he ever truly wanted, and though the town had been played, he was uncertain if he really wanted to leave. And to -teach-, of all things. But maybe...maybe this school could have the opposition he’d been missing. Perhaps there was some superhero, just -waiting- to be arched. And so, with a triumphant laugh, he made a pledge to the night sky that he would FIND his other half, and their battles would live on in infamy--
Unfortunately, he forgot about the timer on the explosives. He’s awfully good at running, though. So, uninjured and cautiously optimistic, Megamind ventured from Evangeline to the Academy, vowing to find his new nemesis and cause destruction and decimation for all who crossed his path. Also, tenure.
Personality: Megamind is extraordinarily smug. Really, just--ridiculous amounts of smug, superiority, arrogance, and confidence. The kind of confidence that just makes you want to sock him in the jaw. He’s also ruthless, callous, insane, and ready to level a city at any given moment.
That’s the supervillain persona.
He’s perfected his public image so well, there’s no one in Metrocity that could imagine him any other way. He’s an incredibly vain person, obsessing over his ‘bad’ image, impressive brain power, and various smoke filled, music laden entrances. He’s so focused on himself, he’s completely crippled his abilities of really getting to know anybody else. At least, as himself. He would have make someone almost completely out of whole cloth to become to be comfortable enough to make any kind of connection with another person (as canon dictates).
That said, if you look close...really close, closer than you’d probably want to, he really is just a damaged kid crying out for some kind of acceptance. Not that he’d ever, in his wildest dreams, admitto that. He has a need to impress and dazzle, making shows out of every plot he’s constructed. This carries over from his childhood of wanting the same praise and acceptance his more impressive classmate--and future nemesis--received. Things affect him very deeply, and he lashes out because of it.
And, being so secretly sensitive, he does care deeply for his only true friend--and right-hand fish--Minion. He’s not incapable of love. Only bewildered by it. Also, he’s kind’ve a jerk.
Greatest Fear: Failure. Amounting to nothing in the great scheme of things. Being nothing, having nothing...and, ultimately, being alone. He very heavily measures his worth by attention, let it be negative or positive. If no one pays attention, then...he’s no one. He’s worthless.
What are your plans with this character?: If he were accepted into the academy, I feel that Megamind would grow and evolve, due to the melting pot of people he’d be around. In his life, he’s only had four strong personalities to interact with, and doesn’t do well with people on a more intimate basis. I think his growth there would be astronomical and fun to play out. And, being a technological and intellectual genius, he could be persuaded to join the fight against the mist. After all...deep down, we’re all curious to know what the life of a hero is like.
❦ Writing
Third person writing sample:
He hadn’t been prepared for the drive after porting. Well, he had, he had driven the invisible car a hundred times--but he hadn’t been ready for how long it was going to be. How long he was going to be left with his thoughts, driving through acres of woodland. The voyage beforehand served as decent distraction, but now...
Megamind sighed. The looping Jethro Tull CD wasn’t helping clear his incredible headspace. He removed the disc and tossed it into the empty seat next to him. The white envelope there caught his eye. He scoffed, a smirk forming. ‘Applicable Sciences and Technologies’. Honestly. An ambitious title to be sure, but he was less than optimistic about his future pupils.
“I wonder what my students will be applying my sciences to.” He laughed.
The silence in the car was heavy.
While he had been spending a decent amount of time alone in Metrocity lately, this particular solitude was...unsettling. Because he knew the space beside him wouldn’t be filled for awhile. He told Minion it was only on a trial basis. He told him he probably wouldn’t even stay a semester. He told him he’d be back soon.
Now that Megamind was on the road, headed for the school...his leaving became much more real. The air was easier to breathe. That pesky gloom was starting to lift. He was even a little excited. New beginnings, people who had yet to get used to his particular showmanship--...and still, a part of him ached. What was the deal.
Megamind wanted to go. He wanted to get out of that hero-less hole. But...he looked over his shoulder a moment, eyeing the Brainbots powered down in the back seat. The unfastened seat belts. No friendly whirring of animatronic limbs. No pleasantly evil chatter, passing of donuts, or crumpling of road maps...
Before he could muse further, the car came around a corner of trees...and there it was. Truly a remarkable structure, the architecture being a kind of artistry the cold, modern steel of Metrocity never had. As he parked the car later on, an icy fist seized his heart. He turned to gaze upwards at the building, smothering his panic as quickly as it came. This was all suddenly very real. And he was very much on his own.
First person writing sample:
So.
Salutations, Academy. I can’t express my complete and inexorable joy at being so formally invited here. I’m certain you all feel the same--and true, there were numerous fine facilities such as this clamoring for my genius.
But.
I chose you. Now--I wouldn’t feel quite so honored as I’m certain you’re inclined to feel--and I don’t blame you--but...well, after what’s befallen Metrocity--which everyone has heard about by now, naturally--I won’t take it personally if you begin your uncontrollable choruses of terrified screams. Or rioting. I do adore a good riot.
Diabolically yours,
MEGAMIND
