"We'll leave this one to you, Eishi."
Eishi paused at that, a single eyebrow elegantly raised as his previously poised menu simultaneously lowered. He was hardly the one to deny his friends of anything (ever, really), but he occasionally had his doubts--if Yuuto and Kazuma's eerily matching grins were anything to account for. Actually, it was a bit typical of Yuuto sport such a look, but when Kazuma actually synced, Eishi took it as his cue to be wary. After a long pause, he asked slowly, "...why?"
"Because, y'know," Yuuto supplied with a crooked grin, making random hand motions as he did so, "you look really cool when you do it."
The singular raised eyebrow lifted another fraction.
Kazuma choked back a guffaw at the comment, nudging his light haired friend beside him as some vague form of comment on subtlety. (But he didn't say anything about not agreeing.) Clearing his throat with his amused grin still lingering, he covered smoothly, "I'm sure he means that this place is Korean-owned, and you can speak Korean, so it'd be, uh, cool if you ordered in Korean."
That explanation warranted another skeptical look from Eishi over the top of his menu, his eyebrow arching even more, if it was at all possible. Again, his two friends pasted matching grins on their faces, playing innocent (rather poorly). Eishi almost snorted. Well, whatever. Ordering food was a small matter, and his friends could be decidedly weird more often than not. "Whatever," he reiterated, lifting a hand to summon the nearest waitress.
He was greeted with a friendly smile and a standard Korean greeting before he ordered. Kazuma and Yuuto were still watching him with similarly dumb expressions on their faces, eyes glimmering with somewhat awkward (in Eishi's opinion) fascination. His eyebrow that had finally receded back to its original place arched slightly again, before changing to a neutral expression again to calmly place their orders. With the number of times they had gone out to eat together in celebration, Eishi knew well enough what his two friends liked to order. And if he happened to get it wrong, it was too bad for them. They made him order, after all.
After the ordering process was completed, he smiled an obligatory smile and handed the menus back to the blushing, slightly awestruck waitress. When he turned back to his friends, he was mildly disturbed to find they had similar (though not quite exact) expressions of awestruck adoration (uh) on their faces. By then, Eishi was beginning to feel a bit unsettled, as he asked slowly, "...what?"
"That's so cool," Yuuto complimented, grinning even wider. "I don't think I'll ever get tired of that."
This time, Eishi did snort and shook his head. "You're just saying that so that I would take care of ordering. I bet you guys want me to cook for you too."
"Well, if you're offering..." Kazuma began, trailing off with a sideways look towards Yuuto, who was at this point practically beaming.
"It just tastes better when Eishi makes it, right?" Yuuto supplied instantaneously, grin turning a bit devious.
"You guys say the same thing about him," Eishi replied in a deadbeat tone as he took a sip of his tea.
"Nah, Yungyong agrees with us," the light haired boy jumped in again, breaking apart the wooden chopsticks to poke lightly at the nearest side dish. Just the way Eishi said "him" was enough for his friends to identify. (The indignant tone and the heavy emphasis; it was that one special tone Eishi always used to refer to his cousin. They all knew it quite well.) "At least, that's what he said in his letter from last week."
Kazuma simply nodded in silent agreement as he casually swiped a potato from under Yuuto's chopsticks and popped it into his mouth. The whine that came with it went completely ignored.
Meanwhile, something was not clicking in Eishi's mind. He paused for a long moment, half-empty teacup still suspended in the air as he very slowly came to a realization. Very slowly. Kazuma refilled his cup in the meantime. "Wait a minute, wait a minute," he began with a shake of his head and the decline of his now full teacup. "Why is he writing you and not m--... Why is he writing you?"
"Maybe because you never respond," Kazuma commented nonchalantly as he refilled his own cup.
"...that's because he writes weird things."
Yuuto laughed and stole Kazuma's portion of kimchi while his hands were occupied by the tea.
"Hey!"
Yungyong did have a habit of asking (very) detailed questions (they could be considered heartfelt, really) about how his cousin was doing, and with the lack of responses from said annoyed cousin, he naturally defaulted to said cousin's best friends who were conveniently also his own friends. Of course, Yuuto and Kazuma were somewhat sworn to secrecy about the content of those letters. Unsurprisingly, discussing Eishi was something the three of them hardly seemed to tire of. It was practically up there with the topic of soccer. But Eishi wasn't allowed to know that, as he was prone to characteristic frowns and occasionally smacking the back of their heads in retaliation.
The exchange had made Eishi somewhat indignant, and only Yuuto and Kazuma knew him well enough to be able to tell that was his own vague way of sulking. Only not really, because Kaku Eishi did not sulk. The two exchanged glances knowingly just as the previous waitress returned with a plateful of raw meat and giggled in Eishi's general direction. Kazuma, who sat at the end of the table on one side next to Yuuto, reached instinctively to take it before being directly intercepted by Eishi's hand. He blinked in surprise.
"Hey, Eishi. We weren't serious about making you cook-"
"Hmm?" came the nonchalant response, coupled with the sizzling of the grill as the meat was abruptly dumped on it. "I don't remember hearing such a request."
"He's trying to be cool again," Yuuto whispered with a grin over at the other dark haired boy. That too was a common thing; it was a typical sort of reaction for whenever Yungyong ever came up in conversations. Even though they knew better than anyone about the relationship the two cousins shared, they also couldn't help but find the intense rivalry at least a little amusing. (At this point in time, Yuuto also took the opportunity to swipe seaweed from under Kazuma's suspended chopsticks to continue the ongoing battle.)
Kazuma retaliated by drinking out of Yuuto's teacup. (Eishi rolled his eyes fondly and split the remaining tofu evenly in the middle for the two of them.)
"It's not a battle, you two," Eishi commented in faint bemusement. "Those side dishes are refillable."
The other two looked at their friend for a long moment before exchanging glances. As soon as they made eye-contact, they laughed, "No, it's definitely a battle!"
(But at the same time, they scraped out even portions into Eishi's bowl.)
"You just haven't been eating enough," Kazuma commented with a grin, passing extra shares of kimchi to his friend, knowing how he liked it.
"That's because you guys made me cook."
"Ahhhh, now you bring it back up!" Yuuto laughed, reaching across the table to refill all their teacups. "That's Eishi for you."
"Yeah, yeah," he replied, a small smile finding his way to his lips as he distributed the cooked meat between the three of them. "You two know me so well, don't you."
"Of course!" the two called out simultaneously with mirrored laughs. Eishi really could not help but note how well in sync the two were today, even in that. Rather, especially in that response. Nevertheless, a faint laugh escaped from him anyway.
"We're paying for you today too, by the way," Kazuma informed as his chopsticks clashed with Yuuto's. (They were fighting for the last potato.) "Yuuto! You already had two!"
"Yeah, we always have you covered, Eishi," Yuuto supplemented cheerfully while casually putting even more strain on his chopsticks. That said, he redirected his attention to his food rival with a devious grin. "Hey, all's fair in food and war, Kazuma!"
It was times like these that Eishi remembered why these two were his best friends, even outside of U-14 or Rossa or soccer in general. And it was times like these that made it even easy for Eishi to laugh. Even though it was just a small matter of food. Closing his eyes, he smiled serenely.
"Your meat's getting cold."
