EXTENDED APPLICATION -- PLEASE DO AT LEAST A PARAGRAPH ON EACH OF THESE, UNLESS THEY ARE STATED TO BE OPTIONAL
Personality:
As a fourth year Slytherin, Cody Nelson is ambitious - he has plans for when he leaves Hogwarts, revolutionizing the wizarding world through technology. He’s skimmed Hogwarts, A History (after all, he is best friends with Ravenclaws) and knows that a permeation of magic through the millennia prevent the use of technology in the wizarding world. But he’s determined - after all, sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. It’s just a matter of finding the alchemy between the two.

Cody is chivalrous. His mother, being a bartender, has taught him the meaning of chivalry and demanded that he learn how to treat women with absolute respect. This means that he helps girls down when they’re floating on the ceiling, he opens doors, he carries books. He also is a good listener, being his mother’s son, but because of his all-female upbringing and the drill of being respectful to women, he’s really unsure how to deal with the female sex.

Cody doesn’t know how to approach authority figures, especially teachers. Unlike some of his more privileged peers, he doesn’t know how to ask for the things that he needs or wants. Authority figures are experts who are not to be questioned, much more than they are people to demand the services in which they are capable of giving. This doesn’t mean that he’s shy, seeing as he is comfortable with his peers, especially his football buddies.

Cody picks his battles. While he may help a girl down from the ceiling, he won’t duel those the bastard that put her there - what good would that do, especially if he didn’t see it? It wouldn’t benefit him, especially, to make enemies that way. However, his friends matter to him - so he fought with Zak when Zak confounded him, and was deeply concerned when he was sent to Azkaban.

Because Cody is working class poor, he really values his things. His shoes and clothes are clean and well taken care of, his books are stacked nicely in his trunk, and his homework is always neat when he turns it in. His broom is well trimmed and shined. For Christmas his mother got him one of the new Ipod Nanos, and he immediately got a cover for it to keep it safe - and brought it with him to Hogwarts where it sits safely in this trunk, waiting for the day when he figures out how to make technology and magic mesh.

Strengths: Both magical and personality: Cody has a great power of concentration. He’s a brilliant student, doing as much as he can to get the good grades so he can grow up and get a good job. (He only does what is necessary, however. He doesn’t go above and beyond the call of duty.) Having grown up relatively poor in muggle London, he wants to be the CEO of a wizarding company… if that’s possible, at least. Cody is a stand-up boy, the type you can bring home to your parents, especially since he has a clear vision of his goal: security.

Cody is good at physical things - potions, herbology, and the wand work in transfiguration and charms. He was playing soccer at his public elementary school before his Hogwarts letter came, and now he plays Quidditch. The Quidditch schedule isn’t nearly as demanding as his football schedule, so he uses his excess energy for the enthusiasm for his school work.

Weaknesses: Both magical and personality: Cody is a personality chameleon. It was his thirst to prove himself that got him placed in Slytherin, a trait that leads him to act as people want to see him. If a character wants him to be slightly evil, then he’ll be slightly evil; if a character wants him to be studious and witty, he’ll be studious and witty. This also means that Cody has some very deep identity issues, stemming from the fact that he is the bastard son of a philandering pureblood man and a bartender’s one-night stand.

Cody doesn’t slack off in his school work, but bookwork is really hard for him. He has to get himself in the zone to sit down to do his History of Magic, astronomy, and ancient runes homework.

Fears:
Cody fears failure. Seeing as his greatest ambitions are based on success, he really can’t afford to fail. This causes him to pick his battles with more scrutiny than the average person, it causes him to work extra hard on his classes, though he often procrastinates in his best classes, so that he can talk about how little studying he did and he still passed (meaning also that if he had failed, he could blame it on the lack of studying).

Cody also fears loss, both of those he loves and his material possession. His family’s flat was robbed once when he was small, stealing their television and VCR, which only highlights how easy it is to lose the material things he prizes. His mother and grandmother are both in jobs that expose them to the rougher elements of society, and so he worries about losing them in stupid, violent ways.

History:

Cody is a half-blood. His mother works in a trendy bar in London, one that is rented out to the highest bidder with frequency. Once, a highly selective Pureblood event went late into the night, and a philandering pureblood man managed to charm the jaded bartender - and they had a one night stand. Cody is the product of that one night stand. Throughout his childhood, his mother used to tell stories about how strange that party was. Now that Cody is at Hogwarts, he realizes that his father was a wizard. He just doesn’t know which one.

Cody grew up in what might be termed a rough neighborhood in London. He went to a public school, and played soccer at recess and on a rec league. He’s basically optimistic, despite the rough upbringing - his mom worked nights, and often tucked him into bed before leaving for her work. But because she worked nights, they had a close relationship, where Cody knew every detail of his conception (though not the explicit ones, ew) and subsequent upbringing. Cody knows he is loved, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting to do better than his upbringing.

Physical Description: At the least, provide base details of build, height, eye/hair colour, and complexion. Cody has a slight, athletic build, is 5' 5", has brown eyes and dark hair. He’s fair skinned, but gets tan in the summer sun.

Significant Relationships:
Family: Absentee pureblood father. Who is it? Who knows!
Friends: Cody and Lia Callahan are kinda sorta maybe maybe not dating.

Special Considerations: Cody owns a second hand not-so-great-when-new broom. Off brand. Because he's on the Quidditch team as Chaser.

Cody received an ipod for Christmas from his mother. The ipod is currently in his trunk, completely inoperable. However, he has the idea that he can make it work. I plan for him to maybe get his ipod to turn on by the end of the current academic school year. But the batteries soon run out -- the problem of magical power takes him until the middle of his seventh year to master. By the time he's a seventh year, he's retrofitting ipods to order for other students, but the music has to be added off campus. Once he leaves Hogwarts, he goes to work in the London Apple store. There, he becomes a Genius and two years later he's perfected the magical ibook. It's a small, very lucrative business... and over the years he gains recognition. He begins to work directly with Apple Corporate and by the time he's 30 he's a millionaire and his computers are beginning to infiltrate the wizarding world. Thus, currently, his grade in Ancient Runes is an A because it is very bookwork intensive, but it will improve to an E by the time he takes his OWLs because of the importance to his future story.

COMMUNITY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS -- ONLY ANSWER THE SECTION APPLICABLE TO YOUR CHARACTER
Hogwarts:
Year: 4th
House: Slytherin
Why are they in that house? Cody really is ambitious, he is opportunistic, and he is materialistic. He’s a good student, but he doesn’t enjoy it, so that rules out Ravenclaw. He’s not so very loyal, considering his opportunistic streak, which rules out Hufflepuff. And he’s certainly not altruistic, thus ruling out Gryffindor.
Position: Quidditch Chaser

ROLEPLAY SAMPLE -- PLEASE ENSURE THAT THIS IS IN THIRD PERSON NARRATIVE POINT OF VIEW
Cody decided that after he was all cooped up in the Ravenclaw tower of all places, herded into the Great Hall, and told he'd be sleeping in the Hospital Wing, he needed a good game of soccer. He couldn't find Zak for the life of him, and none of the Gryffindors he had run into seemed to know where he was. And none of the other people Cody normally played with seemed to be around.

He would go and wallow in the mud. He played hard, trying to get as dirty as possible, and as happened sometimes the ball went wild.

MOD-ONLY QUESTIONS -- THESE WILL ONLY BE KNOWN TO THE MODS
Character Secrets: Cody is a halfblood because his mother had sex with a wizard. He suspects, but cannot prove this.
