Ok you smarties, I need advice:
What malware protection should I be running on my Windows XP?
I've used Mac for ages, but there's one PC in my office that I've been using as my only computer, and the spyware is making me crazy. I bought it used and it came with many infections, but there's software on it I don't have the discs for, so no wipe-and-reinstalling the OS. Over the years I've tackled the worst of it, but there's one I can't shake, and I need to get serious about protecting it now that it's the main machine for my accounting and design file storage.
Every single day, AOL Safety and Security Center alerts me that during the scheduled scan, it found and blocked "Traffic Advance", and then the Firefox icon in the Quick Launch tray disappears. Every. Day. For. Two. Years.
It's part of my routine, to click OK on the Alert and then drag the Firefox icon from the Start Menu to the Quick Launch again, because I am patient and negligent. It's always on my vague Fix Someday List, but who knows what that little bastard is up to before Security finds it and blocks it every day. Adaware and Spybot never find it, I've tried removing it myself, it just keeps coming back, stealing my Firefox icon and for all I know - sending thousands of spam emails in the background.
So what works for you?
