[oo5] Tuesday: character bibliography: five quotes
I. "And, after all, what is a lie? 'Tis but the truth in a masquerade." -- Lord Byron
Ianto has ... uh, a definite problem with truthiness. Generally, his lying is because he's trying to prevent something bad from happening. For example: Lisa in the basement, or in the case of roleplay canon, trying to avoid telling Jack that he fobwatched the Doctor. Or that Kate ran off because Ix died in the year of hell. Which was kind of residually because he did something stupid. Oops.
II. "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." -- Friedrich Nietzsche
Ianto definitely has a lot of problems with ... self-righteousness, sanctimony, various ways of justifying his actions because he thinks he's doing the right thing. In doing the things he did to the Master, for the reasons he did (so that the Master could feel his existence stripped away from him), he really kind of ... became no better than the thing he was trying to fight. >.>;
III. "I hold the world but as the world ... a stage where every man must play a part, and mine a sad one." -- William Shakespeare (The Merchant of Venice, as spoken by Antonio)
I can definitely parallel Ianto a lot with Antonio as far as certain interpretations of The Merchant of Venice go. Because Antonio risks his own happiness (and for that matter, his life) to help someone he loves attain their own happiness. Plus, I dunno, I think Ianto would have sold a pound of flesh to the Master in order to help Jack out during the year of hell. Not that it came to that, but just sayin'. As for the quote itself, rather than my Shakespeare ramble, er ... I think at this point he's just floating through the motions of life and playing his part. Et al.
IV. "To do a great right, do a little wrong." -- William Shakespeare
And this kind of goes along with the fobwatching thing ... in Ianto's mind right now, definitely, the ends justify the means. Even if that includes ridding the world of the Doctor, well ... that's a little wrong in exchange for getting the Master out of the way. Of course, he's a little past that right now - but that doesn't mean he's sorry for any of it. Which could be a problem. Ahem.
V. "The heart will break, but broken live on." -- Lord Byron
I think this one is self-explanatory. :D
