I just started reading the "Record of abuse - female witnesses" document, but I've had to stop. I just can't continue. I'll put the link here, and maybe some day I'll be able to read it.
I can't read stuff like that anymore. I could barely stomach it before I became a mother. Now that I am a mother, I just can't see anything but my son in the role of the abused, and that makes me furious/sick. That maybe makes me a coward, I dunno.
It's probably a bad sign that I feel neither surprised nor strongly affected by that report. After the Foynes cases et al I've a very low opinion of what people are capable of doing.
Child abuse exists. It's sad, but it's something we have to accept and minimise as much as possible.
But the nationwide network of collaborators in the church, gardai, judiciary and government who conspired to protect abusers, intimidate victims, stonewall inquiries and eventually attempt to claim that the whole thing is sensationalism by "de medjia", now that's what makes you proud to be Irish.
