2016 Reading Resolutions

Jan 03, 2016 14:21

I wasn't sure whether to post these or not, but, hey, public accountability will be good for me.

2015 Reading Resolutions
  1. Purchase no more than 52 books.
No. I purchased 60. But I did meet the goals behind the resolution, which were to read all the books I bought that year and to reduce the number of books in my TBR pile. Part of this is because many of the books were replacements for books tragically lost in the Great Flood of 2014, so I'd already read them.

  2. Read 25 books by writers of color.
Yes. I somewhat arbitrarily counted long novellas as books.

    1. Ama Ata Aidoo, Changes: A Love Story
    2. Aliette de Bodard, On a Red Station, Drifting
    3. Jennifer Marie Brissett, Elysium
    4. Zen Cho, Sorceror to the Crown
    5. Ta-Nehisi Coates, Between the World and Me
    6. Kyra Davis, Just One Lie
    7. Kyra Davis, Just One Night
    8. Kyra Davis, Dangerous Alliance
    9. Kyra Davis, Deceptive Innocence
    10. Tananarive Due, The Between
    11. Mikaela Everett, The Unquiet
    12. N.K. Jemisin, The Fifth Season
    13. N.K. Jemisin, The Killing Moon
    14. N.K. Jemisin, The Shadowed Sun
    15. Kiese Laymon, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America
    16. Jeannie Lin, Gunpowder Alchemy
    17. Courtney Milan, Trade Me
    18. Alisha Rai, Bedroom Games
    19. Alisha Rai, Night Whispers
    20. Alisha Rai, A Gentleman in the Street
    21. Tayeb Salih, Season of Migration to the North
    22. Tayeb Salih, The Wedding of Zein and Other Stories
    23. Kamila Shamsie, A God in Every Stone
    24. Suleikha Snyder, Bollywood and the Beast
    25. Kai Ashante Wilson, The Sorceror of the Wildeeps

The following anthologies also had a large proportion of writers of color:

    1. Kathryn Allan & Djibril al-Ayad, Accessing the Future
    2. Fábio Fernandes & Djibril al-Ayad, We See A Different Frontier

  3. Read 20 books owned since 2012 or earlier.
Yes. 38! My TBR pile is down to 89 books! This is the first time it's been below double digits since high school. (Though that's partly due to determined weeding of books I've had for a long time and haven't read.)

  4. Read 5 books in translation.
Nope. Just the two by Tayeb Salih.

  5. Read 3 books by African writers.
    Yes.
    1. Ama Ata Aidoo, Changes: A Love Story
    2. Tayeb Salih, Season of Migration to the North
    3. Tayeb Salih, The Wedding of Zein and Other Stories

2016 Reading Resolutions
I'm keeping mostly the same ones. They did work out pretty well.
  1. Purchase no more than 52 books.
  2. Blog at least 26 books.
  3. Read 25 books by writers of color.
  4. Read 25 books owned since 2012 or earlier. (I have read everything I bought 2013-2015. Go me!)
  5. Reduce TBR pile to 59. (I.e., cull if necessary.)
  6. Read 4 books in translation.
  7. Read 3 books by African writers.
