But there's almost no modern band more consistently disappointing than the Arcade Fire.

Explain?

So I got their first album and thought it was OK. There's one or two songs on it I like pretty well, but a lot more songs that I wanted to like way more than I actually liked. So I got their second album, and was kind of excited about it, because all the reviews were really good and they recorded it in a church or whatever and everyone was all jazzed.

And it was WORSE than the first one. Besides "keep the car running" there isn't really anything I can get behind... kind of bland, eh indie-pop mush. COME ON PEOPLE. Please stop telling me the Arcade Fire is soooooo good!

There only other thing I can think of that disappointing is the Bloc Party's "A Weekend in the City." What WAS that?!?

I remember first hearing Funeral in early 2005 and, just like you, really loved a couple songs from it ("Neighborhood #1" and "Rebellion (Lies)"). All the hype scared me off a bit. But a couple weeks ago they played it at this one coffee place I was at and I got REALLY into it. It actually lives up to the hype in hindsight (or maybe I just was drinking really amazing coffee). I haven't listened to Neon Bible at all; I have it filed under "listen to one of these years" so we'll see.

And I never got into Bloc Party. They struck me as sort of a cuddly version of Gang Of Four and they were coming out right when I was getting really into GoF. All I can say is that when I saw them all reunited and touring in 2005, as they smashed a microwave to pieces on stage during one of their songs, I couldn't help but think, "Yeah, Bloc Party, I'd like to see you top that!" Because what really makes a great band is how skillfully you can destroy major appliances in front of a live audience.
