Haven't seen this yet (though I have been slowly catching up on The Unusuals, in which he is DELICIOUS), but I know he's supposed to be amazing in it, so I really need to...
He acted his ass off, and so did his costars, and Bigelow deserves all the awards for her directing.
It was really intense and very violent, but I think what Bigelow did right was give you a visceral, horrible portrait of how awful war is, both for soldiers and civilians alike, on all sides of armed conflict, and also how terrible it is to try and fit yourself back into society after you've seen the things they've seen.
I thought The Hurt Locker was excellently done - really nicely focused on the war not on the politics around it, and had a great eye for character nuance. I was so thrilled it took home the best picture Oscar, for several reasons.
