A movie and some thoughts

Across the Universe is the first movie I've seen in a long time where the characters consistently find that subverting the system is less productive than working within in. It doesnt glorify radicals, even during wartime, and kicks out a main character who's an illegal immigrant until he gets a visa. Has an appeal to it. Even if it was a musical ( Read more... )

I enjoy/appreciate the thoughts in the post. With that said though, aside from the film having "an appeal to it," would you recommend the film? I would draw a distinction between the two, and I won't deny that part of my craves for some fallibility in Julie Taymor, while the other part of me wants her to continue her nontraditional, theatrical/cinematic rampage.

It's slow in parts, very amusing in others. That said, I walked into it with no expectations and wanting to like it which definitely helped. If you're cool with the very campy, you'll probably enjoy it. I thought it was worthwhile.

It also convinced me that the purpose of artists is to give a vocabulary for more difficult, nuanced, or abstract concepts. The body of art is the lexicon of the society. Might be something we'd have fun talking about.

Either it was my mood, or the movie, but it did make me think a lot more than I would have expected from something with parallels to Rent (the movie), Momma Mia, and Hair.

I found that movie amazing on many levels. The political/cultural messages that you pointed out I find very interesting to think about. The music was also amazing, the acting was great, and the visuals/editing/puppets/effects/pretty much everything was stunning.

I grew up in an area much like Oberlin in its liberalism, so I've always gotten frustrated by idealistic people who have naive ideas of how to make changes in the world. (Not that *I* know how to make those changes, but I know you won't get anywhere by standing on a soap box preaching to the choir, as it were)
