I'm currently planning on applying to grad schools for a PhD in Cognitive Science this coming fall and I've ran into a barrier of sorts: while I'm trying to narrow down the list of schools I will apply to, it seems a lot of the web sites that list information about grad schools and programs don't have accurate listings for "Cognitive Science" (eg

- I'm currently in Japan, teaching ESL and studying the language.
- I have a background as a researcher in education, a TESOL certificate, as well as a B.A. in Computer Science, Minor in Linguistics. I hope to start work on a PhD in Cognitive Science (or related studies) in Fall 2007.
- My research interests include language acquisition, computation, translation, and modeling corresponding spatial relations between languages.
- I guess that, yes, I would recommend that everyone comes to Japan once in their life.

- What is your intended degree (i.e., "PhD in Brain Studies")? PhD in Computation & Neural Systems
- What are your research interests? computer vision, unsupervised learning, visual cortex
- Would you recommend your program? definitely, although because Caltech's so small, you'd better be sure that there's at least one or two professors that you'd be interested in working with
- Anything else you'd like to add. I also went through CMU's Cognitive Science program and Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, which I'd also recommend.

- Where are you? University of Rochester, Rochester NY
- What is your intended degree? PhD in Brain & Cognitive Sciences
- What are your research interests? Speech perception, eye-tracking, neuroimaging
- Would you recommend your program? Yes
- Anything else you'd like to add. It's cold here. And it's a great department in its research diversity. Don't believe people who say "Oh, Rochester, that's JUST eye-tracking" or whatever. In terms of the application process, don't limit yourself to just departments that call themselves "cognitive science". A lot of great work is done in psychology departments or linguistics, etc.. Figure out first what kind of work you want to do, read up, and figure out where the people who you want to work with are. Then apply to their departments. I completely failed to do this when I was applying, and I think my life would've been a bit different if I had. (Though, I'd probably still be at Rochester.)
