I've hit the critical mass in albums I've purchased, but haven't listened to yet, so out with the old, in with the new
Artist: David Bowie
Album: Scary Monsters
Why: Next in the list of the Bowie catalogue.
Thoughts: It's harder than I had expected, but still quite enjoyable. I'm going to stop, becuase, again, this one's a classic.
If you're curious:
Ashes to AshesWould My Mother Approve? I expect she's listened to it before, so probably.
Artist: Ghostface Killah
Album: Ironman
Why: I like Ghost.
Thoughts: This was Ghostface's first solo album... and it shows. He seems to be trying to prove he's hard a little too much, and it's reflected more in his vocal style rather than his lyrics. The other major strike against this album is that Cappadonna is on a lot of the tracks. Cappadonna sucks. Strangely he seems more competent here than on recordings later, nor does he drop any lyrics quite as stupid as his "I love you like I love my dick size," but he's still not a welcome presence.
If you're curious:
Daytona 500Would My Mother Approve? I doubt it. The album is pretty uneven.
Artist: BB King
Album: Live At The Regal
Why: It's reputed as his strongest live album.
Thoughts: Unfortunately this is the third live album of his I've picked up recently, and they've all started to bleed together for me, as the setlists share some similarities. Though I think this is the only of the three that wasn't recorded in a prison.
If you're curious:
Sweet Little AngelWould My Mother Approve? She's not big on the blues.
Artist: Curtis Mayfield
Album: Super Fly
Why: I'd never listened to a Curtis Mayfield album before
Thoughts: Here we go with another classic. It's a lot of fun, and once I push past my natural response to laugh along with Blacksploitation, a fairly serious album, which I didn't expect. Mayfield has to have one of the prettiest voices of all time. Also, I couldn't stop laughing when I found the video below.
If you're curious:
PushermanWould My Mother Approve? Not really her thing, I don't think.
Artist: Chuck Berry
Album: The Great 28
Why: It popped up in an article I was reading
Thoughts: This is a great album. It's one of those that I find difficult to listen to in the car without speeding. It's also great fun to hear the influence it was on the Beatles & Beach Boys.
If you're curious:
Johnny B GoodeWould My Mother Approve? I can't imagine anyone not liking this.
Artist: Damain Marley
Album: Welcome to JamRock
Why: I'm about five years behind in getting around to picking it up.
Thoughts: Some phenomenal tracks, only a few that are weak make for an altogether great album. Unsurprisingly, I prefer the ones with social message rather than a club bangers (I think my expectations may be born from the last name).
If you're curious:
The Road to ZionWould My Mother Approve? I think so.
Artist: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Album: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Why: The name kept popping up on my radar
Thoughts: I really like this album, and it took me something like nine listens to be able to pick up the lyrics. Really. The lead singer seems to have combined Thom Yorke's nasal tones, David Byrne's rhythm, and John Fogerty's inability to enunciate, which makes for a very odd listen.
If you're curious:
Let The Cool Goddess Rust AwayWould My Mother Approve? Yes, provided she can look past the voice.
Artist: A Tribe Called Quest
Album: Low End Theory
Why: The name kept coming up
Thoughts: This is a freaking great album. If you like rap, pick it up. Very sharp lyrics.
If you're curious:
ExcursionsWould My Mother Approve? Yeah, I could see her liking this.
Artist: The Fiery Furnaces
Album: Blueberry Boat
Why: I heard it was very odd
Thoughts: Jesus this is a weird album. It's like they were possessed by the ghost of Zappa. I think this might be a concept album? It seems to be about blueberry shipments, pirates, and born again dogs. Musically it's an interesting album, unfortunately sometimes the lyrics thunk.
If you're curious:
Chris MichaelsWould My Mother Approve? I think this might drive her loopy. Jennie on the other hand, would probably love this.
Artist: GZA
Album: Beneath The Surface
Why: I Like GZA
Thoughts: I still haven't made my mind up about this one. I don't care for the backing tracks on most of the songs. That said, it's still the GZA, and his lyrics are fantastic.
If you're curious:
VictimWould My Mother Approve? Nah. It's a fairly uneven album.
