I've been nominated for an Atlantic Journalism Award IN SPORTS REPORTING.

I can't stop laughing. Sarah McGinnis - SPORTS WRITER?

Somehow they were more impressed with my profile of a hockey mom than the feature that earned me an NNA nod. Go figure.

Ha ha ha.
I always find the Sports Writing nominations at both the AJAs and the QCNAs hilarious. they're never for hard sports, but for sports-related features.

I know. The story I'm nominated for was me following a hockey mom around for a day. It was a feature. It had NOTHING to do with sports really. It reflected absolutely no knowledge of sports. Just a nice descriptive feature. Yet now I could become an award winning sports reporter and know absolutely nothing, and in fact detest, the majority of sports. Too funny.

I would suspect most judging types aren't into sports either, so the features are more comfortable to them than hard sports stories that are written in sports-insider code.

Congrats anyway!

That's more the organizers, since they choose the judges. They could actually pick a sports writer as a judge. I have seen it happen, and in those years, the fluffy features related to sports don't usually win.
