I think the reason they put such beautiful girls in sitcoms is so that they can get a wider range of demographics and most guys will tune in to see a pretty girl. It may have been Mary Tyler Moore who pioneered this but the concept was perfected by Ginger and Maryanne. Even I had a crush on Elaine Bennis from Seinfeld but never on any of the Brady ( Read more... )

Ok, before this becomes some Freudian incident and you guys start thinking I should change my name to Oedipus let me say this: "No she doesn't!"
Maybe in this black and white picture of Diane's profile she might slightly resemble my mother but anybody who watches the show and has seen Diane knows there is no real resemblance.
Diane's sophisticated and well-educated demeanor amongst the barflies and roustabouts of the Boston bar is what I like about her anyway, so there!

she's not all that sophisticated and you are assuming that neither of us ever watched this american classic re run sitcom

if anything a 'proper' lady and your mother is a proper lady isn't she?

actually anyone that watched the show would know that many points in the show were to prove how she wasn't as well-educated as she thought herself to be.

Oh I'm not assuming anything. I realize I'm not the only person who has ever watched Cheers. You are wrong though, Diane is sophisticated. In fact, until Frasier showed up she was the only sophisticated one. What else can you say about a barmaid who sits at the the bar and reads when business is slow. She quotes great literary works, she carries herself properly (you were right about that), and she dreams of becoming a writer. Who could ask for anything more? In fact, the only reason she works at Cheers is so she "could discover this vein of American culture." She does not favor my mother.

Ok I think I understand what you are saying. People go to places they feel comfortable (Norm and Cliff go to Cheers but not Diane and James Joyce goes to the coffee shop, not a sleezy dive beneath a seafood resturant). There are exceptions to this though, no? Sometimes people want to get away from other people who are like them. Sometimes its nice to go to a place where nobody knows your name. Not so much a bar, but one place I like to be is Emilie's house (I to bring this into an Emilie refrence). I like being there because nobody who lives there is like me. I am an anomoly (sp?) but I can offer perspective on things that wouldn't be there otherwise. In turn, I can learn things from people who are different than me and gain more depth for myself. I can benefit from them and they can benefit from me. That symbiosis man! But still, being James Joyce in the coffee shop or Norm in the bar is always best, its just good to break from the mold every now and then. Are we speaking the same language here ( ... )
