Home

As he sat on the cargo plane being buffeted around with the rest of his unit his mind drifted back to the day that he had left so many months ago. His mother had broken down completely, sobbing and clutching at him. He knew why. It was because of his father. His father had died in Desert Storm and now he was headed to Afghanistan. It wasn’t Iraq, but it wasn’t that far from it, either.

He knew that it had killed her to see her only son leaving to fight in the Middle East after her husband had died there. He knew that she feared that he would die under the same sky as his father had. They had gotten into a fight when he had told her that he had enlisted in the army. She had screamed at him, saying that their family had sacrificed enough. Her father had died in the invasion of Normandy and her older brother had fought in Vietnam. Her grandfather had fought in the First World War. His father’s best friend, Jake, a man that was considered a part of the family, and whom Colby had always referred to as Uncle Jake had lost his left leg in desert storm a few months after his father had died. Five generations of his father’s family had served in the armed forces, six if you included Colby. He understood why she didn’t want him to join up, but he also knew that he had to - he had watched those towers fall and he knew that it was his duty to fight to defend his country and he had joined up the next day.

He hadn’t been the only one spurred into actions by the events of that day - the line at the recruiter’s office had stretched around the block, made up of those like him who had watched America come under attack and had stepped up to the challenge from the terrorists. As he had looked at the men and women who had stood in that line with him that day, he had seen resolve in their eyes, resolve that those who had attacked them would not get away with it. Many of the people that he had seen in that line had shipped out with him and some of them had ended up in his unit. He’d met Dwayne that day in that line.

The plane and time seemed to slow down the closer they got to the states. He began to fidget with anticipation and he could see many of his fellow soldiers doing the same; Dwayne in particular. He knew that Dwayne wanted to get back to his wife and newborn son more than anything. He had seen the expression on his friend’s face when he’d seen that first picture of his little boy in their tent some weeks earlier and Colby couldn’t wait to meet his godson, either.

Touchdown couldn’t come soon enough for the desert-weary soldiers.
