It was a Mistake
“It was a mistake,” Sam said quietly, not able to look up at the man across the table from him.
“A mistake? How the hell could killing my son have been a mistake?” a mix of incredulity and fury.
“It was a mistake. I was cleared to fire. I was… I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. It was a mistake,” he whispered, anguish coloring his words.
“How could you not know? You were the one holding the gun, you pulled the trigger, you killed him. I don’t care what any review board says, you murdered my son, Braddock,” Sam still didn’t look up, even as he heard the man push the chair away from the table harshly, the door slamming behind him.
He almost wishes the man had punched him, yelled, something. His cold words… they just didn’t seem like enough. He deserved so much worse for what he’d done.
“It was a mistake,” he said again to the empty room, a tear sliding down his cheek.
No matter how many times he said it, he knew that he’d never convince himself that it wasn’t his fault. He’d put a .50 cal in his best friend’s head.
“It was a mistake.”
