So Bad It's Still Not Very Good

I just watched The Princess Bride, a film from some time some time ago (Wikipedia tells me 1987). purplesparkler and Paul were insistent that I watch it, Paul even getting quite upset at my reluctance, so being the amiable chap I am I agreed to watch it. I had a friend who insisted I should watch this when I was 14 or so. I was sceptical because it sounded totally wussy. But I did see it round about that time, and I have only pleasant memories of it ( ... )

Perhaps it was just because I'd had it built up into this amazing thing hat I HAD to see and that my life was deficient for not having seen it - perhaps no film could live up to that billing. And I have friends who seem to enjoy watching it over and over.

But I enjoy silly comedies as well as clever comedies, and I enjoy comedies that mix the two well (Groundhog Day). But I didn't much enjoy this. It was okay - ultimately crap, but they knew it was crap so that made it okay somehow. It was basically, as you say, unobjectionable - and that is not enough.
