By Way Of Sorrow Commentary

Title: By Way Of Sorrow
Fandom: Inception
Rating: NC-17. Actually, I think PG-13 should cover it, but I'm rating for someone's suicide, a bit of gore and sensuality.
Characters: Arthur, Eames, Cobb
Summary: Done for an inception_kink prompt and another prompt. Cobb jumps, on that anniversary night, with Mal. Arthur is left to pick up the pieces. ( Read more... )

I wish every author who writes a longer, more complex piece did this sort of commentary. I love learning about how they got to the decisions they made in the stories. Incredibly insightful, gave me a lot of "oh, I get it" moments, and I love the careful attention to detail and characterisation.

*blushes*

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it xP

I saw this author which did that, and then I realised the commentary idea was awesome and followed. To me anyway, I like doing exactly what you say - learning how this or that author made the story decisions, and how the story changed. (And commentaries are good personal learning points, or so I feel.)

And thanks for making my day XD My beta was complaining I was over-obssessing about detail and characterisation (I can't help it, I'm a Five!) so I'm glad it worked out for someone (:

...There might have been a bit of a disjunct in style - the earlier section has a bit less realism, and I structured it tightly to time in order to give the feeling of a timer going off, and at the end of it, Cobb’s life ends. The lower sections are far more unrestricted and have a looser time-structure. It also gives this sense of time dilation - time stretching, because Arthur isn't consciously keeping track of time. Grief tends to narrow time down to the immediate - today, tomorrow, yesterday.

now that you mention it, i actually noticed this. and now that you put it in such lovely words, it really adds a nice touch to the style. it really does narrow time down. ugh, thank you for that.

also, i enjoyed reading this. it gave me some interesting insights, and i never knew about that particular personality categorizing. enneagrams. i'm gonna check that out.

Thanks (:

I AM SO GLAD SOMEONE NOTICED IT XD

Yep, enneagrams are interesting little things. A bit tricky though, since there are conflicting schools of thought (:

I love reading your thought process. I find when I'm writing things just come and I end up in the same places and use the same characterizations as some other writers, but with no idea how I got there. It's nice to come across someone who has studied and dissected the craft and can explain why their information also works in my brain so well.
