Dear Yuletide Author

Jan 01, 2010 01:01

Hello there and thank you so much for taking on the task of writing a story for me. This is my first year participating in Yuletide, but have been told that these letters are a good idea. I tend to be a bit verbose so what follows is a long letter about me and the four fandoms I requested:

Me, Myself, and I
I like stories and I like reading. I will read almost anything under almost any circumstances, so no matter what you produce for me, I'm sure I will appreciate it. But, I'll try to be a bit more helpful than that. I have written fanfic for Star Trek (reboot), Star Trek Voyager, JAG, and X-Files. My X-Files and Star Trek (reboot) stuff is on this journal and is public, so please feel free to read it. My Voyager and JAG fic was written long ago and hidden away, but can be found on fanfiction.net under the username Cimorene. I have read fic for many, many, many different fandoms as diverse as Gladiator, Law & Order, and Pride & Prejudice and as long as I have a passing acquaintance with the tv show/movie/book have no problem reading fic.

I'm a sucker for Alternate Universe stories and generally enjoy any and all AU stories whether they are an "alternate ending" or simply take the characters and put them in a whole new time/location. That said, the characters must remain true to themselves. I also much prefer a story that follows along a "casefile" type story line, rather than being a plotless sort of romantic story. I also enjoy "snapshot" type stories that give you a glimpse into a moment of time between the characters, but don't necessarily have a protagonist, antagonist, rising action, conclusion, etc. I do not mind explicit material at all, but if it is to be written I prefer f/f slash or het. You can never go wrong with gen.

I dislike sappy romanticism for or PWP stories (although I'll read them if the sex is good). I cannot stand characterizations that are no where near what the original author envisioned them to be - i.e. if you have Brandon and Willoughby have sex I may have to hurt you. I'm not really into any sort of sexual kinks except what is mentioned above, but I am NOT a prude so if you write it (as long as it doesn't involve killing, sex or killing animals, or forcible sex) then I'll read it.

Crossing Jordan
I'm ok with the Jordan/Woody relationship, although they are definitely not an OTP for me. I like how strong and no-bullshit-taking Jordan is, while still being truly effed up deep inside. I'm fascinated by her job and have no "ick" factor when it comes to autopsies or crime scenes. I watched this show when it was on and catch the re-runs on A&E, but was never obsessed with the fandom so if you choose to write this story for me, please do not feel a need to be obsessive about canon details.

I would prefer a Jordan-centric story, but if you do not feel comfortable with that then I like each of the other characters enough I have no problem with them being the center of the story. In my notes I stated that I do not require a romance or pairing. I would also prefer a sort of "case-file" story here, but if you're not up to it - don't sweat it! Since I could take or leave most of the relationships or pairings here though, I would prefer if the story was not a relationship-heavy story and did not have relationship angst in it.

Neil Gaiman - Neverwhere
I LOVE the concept of the Underground stations that we know as one thing being a whole 'nother thing in London Below and would adore a story that explores this concept. Gaiman left the door wide open by sending Richard back to London Below at the end of the story and I leave it to your creativity to come up with a tale that can continue this story. I actually have not seen the BBC television series, although it is in my Netflix queue.

I'm also new to Gaiman and am just acquainted with his novels. That said, I love the concepts of Neverwhere, but am definitely not a stickler for Gaiman canon stuff. Please feel free to use other Gaiman characters, but if you do, do so with the knowledge that if they are from his graphic novels then I may just think you created a really cool original character.

I have no strong dislikes for this book so as long as it meets the general guidelines then I'm sure it will be awesome! I do understand that this book has some dark themes though - please don't feel as if I mean for my general guidelines to hinder the exploration of these themes.

Jane Austen - Sense & Sensibility
I love, love, love this book. I much prefer the story of Marianne and Brandon over anyone else's. Personally, out of all the Austen men, I like Brandon the best (even over Darcy). I'm also a bit of a history nerd too, so I will say that if you are writing in this fandom, please do make an effort to remain historically accurate (although I've never really found this to be a problem in writings for Austen fandoms) since it is a pet peeve of mine.

I don't mind a "what happens next" story or a "fill in the blank" story, or even just an A/U that supposes something did or didn't happen which changes the outcome of the book. If you've already got a story in mind, definitely go for it - there simply isn't enough fanfic of any kind in this particular fandom. Although I said that I'd prefer Marianne and Brandon, if you don't feel comfortable writing those two characters, don't hesitate to write the characters you are most comfortable with.

New Amsterdam
I'm a history nerd. A HUGE history nerd. I even went and got myself an MA in history because I like it so much. Even though this show was canceled before it aired, I watched every episode and have re-watched a few times on Hulu. I'm not obsessive about the show itself, but rather I am completely enamored with the concept of the story. Therefore, feel free to explore Amsterdam's back history. I also love procedural cop shows so feel free to keep it in the present too. Basically this show mixed two of my favorite things - history and cop shows. So, there ya go, write a story that somehow combines the two and I will be forever grateful.

I know Amsterdam was searching for his true love, but I also feel like the viewer really didn't get an opportunity to know the characters all that well so I don't really care that much about characterizations or pairings. Have them, don't have them, pay attention, don't pay attention - not that big of a deal.

So, hopefully that helped. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to figure out a way to answer them. I may edit this letter off and on, but the basics are here!
