Summary: A drawing for America's birthday! Declaration of Independence - July 4, 1776. Some historical facts too.
Twenty-four lawyers and jurists, eleven merchants, nine farmers and large plantation owners; men of means and good education.
They signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Here are some of their stories:
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay for his debts and he died in poverty.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay and his family was kept in hiding. His possesions were taken from him and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr, noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. Nelson asked George Washington to burn down his home and Nelson went bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home destroyed and his wife was captured and sent to jail where she died a few months later.
John Hart was driven from his sick wife's bedside and their 13 children fled for thier lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children gone. He died a few weeks later of exaughstion and a broken heart.
Norris and Livingston suffered similiar fates.
Nine of the 56 signers fought and died of wounds or other hardships in the war.
I always think it's good to remember why this day is important, even the bad parts of it. Thanks for taking a look guys! :D America is WIN.
