The first thing Minseok had done when they had gotten to the beach was not take his things inside like everyone else, no. He’d abandoned his bag on the porch in favor of leaping past the concrete and sea grass and burying his hands in the warm sand. He’d burrowed in up to his forearms like some kind of sand crab before Lu Han had gotten over to see.
“That your way of saying you want to be buried tomorrow?”
Minseok sent a rather scathing glance back at him. There’d be repercussions if that was tried, that glance said. “No way. Just making sure I’m at the beach.”
Lu Han looked up at the long stretch of surf out in front of them, and tried not to laugh or give into the urge to put his foot on Minseok’s butt and shove him over. Instead he just watched as Minseok carefully raised his hands, keeping them flat and scattering sand off of them.
“Looks like some kind of UFO,” Lu Han commented. And then bolted into the rental house before Minseok could shove a handful of sand down his pants. Lu Han had reason to worry.
It’d happened before.

Minseok’s sand castles were the best sand castles, and Lu Han kept his mouth closed on that because Minseok would have gloated. Or maybe that was himself. It didn’t matter. He had the most analytical mind. He tore apart things and reconstructed them, and when Lu Han didn’t get it, he could and had drawn a picture for him. But it’d been fun to tutor Minseok in Mandarin because of it, Minseok sticking his tongue out at him but picking it up quickly. They both had their areas of strength.
Lu Han’s strength that day was creating universes and destroying them with his feet and buckets of seawater. Minseok’s was to sit and mix and patch and stack, all with his tongue between his teeth.
“You need more sunscreen,” Lu Han breathed into Minseok’s ear, making him jump from where he’d been focused.
No sand castles were harmed in the carrying out of his evil plan - to get Minseok into the water first. Chanyeol was down the beach hollering like an injured walrus as he was being buried in sand by Baekhyun, Jongdae and Kyungsoo. Sehun was gamely trying to use Jongin like a surfboard in the water. Tao was off collecting rocks or something, and Kris and Joonmyun were probably planning their dinner that night or their retirement funds or something as Yixing dozed.
Lu Han wanted to play, and Minseok charged as Lu Han knew he would. They both plunged into the water, displacing an incoming wave with a shout. His trunks were being dragged as was the sand under his feet and then Minseok was on his back, and he nearly drowned in a froth and swirl and laugh. His eyes were stinging, hair streaming as Minseok dragged him up. He spit out a mouthful of whale pee or whatever it was in the water.
Minseok face might have been in the way.
The dismayed scrunch of Minseok’s face totally made up for being dunked five seconds later.
“Truce,” he gurgled, arms around Minseok’s neck. Chest to chest, their shorts catching together in the tide, Lu Han’s heart going faster than it ought to have, just being close.
“Truce,” Minseok agreed, sounding far too smug.
Truce that had them backing away from each other with their hands up.
And even then, Lu Han edged out sideways, holding his swimming trunks in case Minseok had any ideas.

One foot cut on a piece of shell (Joonmyun - yelping all the way), sand in someone’s ear (Chanyeol, naturally), and a grumpy Sehun were the casualties of the day. Long showers and subsequent dinner had sent them all into the most blissful of food comas as they relaxed in the deck chairs and hammocks. Sehun eschewed all of them, opting to stretch out on the boards as Joonmyun used him as a footrest. Trudging through sand was hard work, and so was plowing around in the water. One by one, yawning faces nudged each other into the house as the last of the light left. Tired mumbles around toothbrushes, and jabs with pillows as they got every last bit of enjoyment out of the day.
But as Lu Han poised to tumble into his pallet, he noted a distinct absence. Minseok. Minseok hadn’t been in the bathroom, because Lu Han had just been there, and he hadn’t been in the other sleeping room because everyone there had been passed out with Baekhyun already whimpering.
The air outside was cool, but not cold, when Lu Han found Minseok in one of the porch swings. Minseok looked up, but didn’t objected when Lu Han sprawled into it beside him.
“Not tired?”
“Just wanted to unwind. It was quiet out here.”
Lu Han just chuckled. Though it sounded pointed, he knew Minseok didn’t mean for him to leave.
“Nice being back here with everyone.”
“Mmm,” Minseok agreed.
“Who gets sunburned first? Kyungsoo or Joonmyun?”
“You,” Minseok said, and Lu Han leaned over, biting Minseok’s shoulder through his shirt. Blech. A mouthful of cloth. But Minseok’s shoulders were warm under his arm and they leaned together. The creak of the swing, the sound of their feet on the boards, their breathing, and the rush of the ocean was all there was to hear.
“Your sand castle is still standing,” Lu Han said, seeing the lump of it down the beach.
“At least until high tide.”
“You’ll build a better one tomorrow.” Of that Lu Han had no doubt. His lips brushed over Minseok’s cheekbone until Minseok turned for a proper kiss, lips warm and hand cool that curved around his. Minseok smiled for him, snuggling closer so that Lu Han could rest his head against him. It wasn’t until he jerked, nearly falling asleep, that Minseok took him by the hand and led him back inside.
