Halp!

So I'm recognizing that my f-list is all about the same age, and most (if not all?) of my regular commenters cook largely for themselves. Im on a fairly tight budget, and it would be much cheaper to buy crappy food. However, I would prefer not to. So, guys, I NEED YOUR HELP ( Read more... )

Pastas. (As long as they're not the thick, creamy, delicious-yet-heart-attack-causing dishes my nana makes). My favorite is whole-wheat pasta with some light pesto and fresh veggies.

My last final ends at 3:30 Friday :/
Kind of a bummer, since I'll probably be one of the last ones to leave.

Fresh food is much easier to buy than frozen foods like SmartOnes and such. Pretty much, if you can avoid frozen food, that's the cheapest solution in the long term. Think about it. You can buy a pound of chicken for about $4. Technically a serving size of chicken is 4-5 ounces, so a pound is about 3-4 meals. Mix that in with some rice, or some veggies, and you're golden.

A week ago, Big Y had a buy one, get two free on chicken. I scooped up three 2 pounders, and got 6 pounds of chicken for about $10. Froze most of it, and now I have enough chicken to last me forever.

Add animal protein to every breakfast. It jump starts your metabolism, and while I don't know how your body will react, mine responds in leaps and bounds when I do that consistently for a couple days. Turkey bacon, hard boiled egg, these things can be kept in the fridge and added quickly to each breakfast (though I would suggest microwaving the turkey bacon). Yogurt is definitely good, but it's not quite enough protein ( ... )

How do YOU all make your salads more interesting?

Dried cranberries! (Or raisins, if you prefer.) Also almonds! (Or walnuts, or some other kind of nut, if you prefer.)

I would buy those SmartOnes or whatever when theyre on sale, but again the sodium content is through the roof.

I eat Lean Cuisine frozen dinners, and most have about 25% of your daily sodium. That *is* a lot, but if you eat healthy for breakfast and lunch, you're not really going to be consuming that much salt earlier in the day, right? I wouldn't necessarily recommend Smart Ones (or whatever) on a daily basis, but having one here or there isn't going to kill you.

What snacks work well for you guys in terms of staving off hunger?

Apples or pears or grapes. Granola bars.

There are tons of lunch/snack suggestions here in the comments, from when I essentially asked this same question of my flist a couple months ago. ;)
