1. Religion would be invoked for recruiting in strongly Protestant areas. Another cause was the restoration of the Winter Queen to her throne.
2. Pay Rates are still in the Clann manual. See A Soldier's Life, question 26. Note that contrary to a persistent Clann Tartan myth, Pike and Shot were paid the same amount, 6 Swedish Riksthalers/month.
These rates are also quoted in Swords for Hire (great book, BTW), citing a 1629 letter from King Gustavus.
As for when the soldiers were paid, the best answer is "late". This was a constant complaint, and frequent cause of mutiny, in all armies of the period.
7. Cheap swords would be provided. Despite the myths about Highlanders, back home only the upper class could afford a full size sword
