Does the meaning change from culture to culture? Is it customary for a French family to specifically say that "I welcome you into our family"? Does "Congratulations" essentially mean the same thing here? Did mom already consider him a part of the family, having been with you for so long? Is this marriage just a natural next step? Interesting thoughts....off to comment on my new bro-in-law's myspace....I have a welcoming to do...
I wouldn't say that 'Congratulations' means the same thing as welcoming one into the family.... I imagine it meaning more like "I'm so happy for you" and "Wishing you the best
