Howl! I agree with this. Other than that, I actually don't go to anime for comfort food (I am more likely to pick up an already-too-often-read bad manga, Fujisaki Kou, I am looking at YOU).
Although, I don't know if this counts, lately I have made a ton of progress in One Piece due to the fact that I can always throw it on and snuggle with Ptolemy in the evenings. :-P
I find long-running and involved shows like OP to be very comforting, too. Just because it's nice to be able to just drop deep a big story and forget about everything else for a while. I think that's why I like marathoning series (or the idea of it) so much.
I generally don't rewatch anime very much either. I keep copies around for pimping purposes...or music video inspiration. Regardless, I've been away from my anime collection for years, and even though it's in my house now, it's all currently in boxes.
If I were to rewatch something, it would probably be Meitantei Conan. In particular, I have a couple of favorite Conan movies that I don't mind seeing repeatedly.
I've never seen or read any Detective Conan, but I have several friends who really like it and I always wonder about it! I probably shouldn't add it to my backlog at this point, though... haaaaa. >_>
I probably shouldn't add it to my backlog at this point, though...
Since the manga is over 70 volumes long...yeah, that would be rough.
You may want to have someone show you some of the good movies, though. (I don't know if it's still possible to get access to the English dubs...or if you even watch dubs...but of the six that were released, it's worth watching The Fourteenth Target and Captured in Her Eyes.)
One P- ok, enough of that :p Let's see, GTO is one I turn to when I need a good laugh. Idk, there aren't many that I'll sit and watch the entire show again, but there are a ton that I'll go back and hit specific arcs/episodes:
I need something incredibly cathartic - eg. watching Ichigo save Rukia from execution
I need something insanely happy - Renton and Eureka's reunion in Eureka 7
I need something incredibly sad, but also uplifting - hrm, last episode of Angel Beats, or the end of the Haku/Zabuza story in Naruto?
Obviously, I change the answers up for one thing, there are One Piece answers for all of them but you get the idea^^
edit: though, I admit I do put on Howl an awful lot when I need something playing in the background
It's ok if One Piece is your answer to everything. I mean, I was sort of expecting that? :P /runs
Totally side note: So many people I know who love watching Howl are *actually* dissatisfied with the story itself. Are you? I include myself, btw, but I can offer no explanation as to why I can say I enjoy it the most of all Miyazaki's works (or nearly so), yet in the next breath can criticize the storyline so heavily. Weird? Is it truly the lure of Christian Bale? ;)
(Not that I am assuming you don't like it. I'm just sayin'.)
Hmmm, I don't know how to answer that really; I mean, I don't watch Miyazaki films for the story, generally speaking, but as far as Miyazaki stories go, I think it's pretty good. It serves as an adequate vehicle to drive the characters along. It's certainly 100x better than the Diana Wynne Jones book it's based on :p
Though, I suppose maybe having read the book helps, since my mind automatically fills in the inevitable Miyazaki plotholes?
Idk, I guess I don't really see much to be dissatisfied with, but then, for me if you give me lovable characters, the rest pretty much takes care of itself.

Wow: you are the 2nd person to say this to me in the last month (out of 2 people I've asked, LOL), both of which being the only 2 times I've ever heard this opinion (rather than the other way around). Fascinating?
I have no strong feelings about which was better in and of themselves, other than the fact that I could clearly see where Miyazaki took out the scissors and made his changes as I watched, and I dislike THAT because it takes me out of the story. Also - while being a vehicle is expected of any Miyazaki movie - I disliked the pretty cavalier anti-war insert. I honestly don't mind the use of a soapbox, it's just when it's inserted without making sense that bothers me so much.
Your response in general intrigues me - I'm not actually a particular Miyazaki fan, but most people look at me like I'm an alien for saying so.
Like Sara, I'm more likely to go to manga for comfort. I can't even think of a non-anime show I would go to when I'm stressed/unhappy/need to cope. On the other hand, I listen to TV on my ipod when I walk to/from work, and I notice that I select particular episodes on the walk in (when I'm more likely to be unhappy): Bleach 15, The Firebending Masters from Avatar, you don't need to know my Alien Force comfort episodes. The only show where it doesn't matter which episode I watch is...
you don't need to know my Alien Force comfort episodes I don't?
I'm more likely to go to manga for comfort I do read or thumb though books a lot too in these sorts of moments, so it's not like I only watch things. I have a few books that have extremely high read counts thanks to the last couple of years, let me tell you! Sometimes I want a really passive activity though. (Because, you know, sometimes turning a page is just SO hard! ;))
Well, not unless you watch Ben 10 Alien Force. In which case, the episodes are Save the Last Dance and Grounded.
Passive video for me is something I don't care about at all. In the past, I had a habit of just leaving the TV on as noise (Cartoon Network, History Channel, Discovery...any of these would be good for a constant drone). But this summer, I've barely turned the TV on at all. It's part of the whole noSims, allManga thing, but I still don't understand it, since three years ago, the TV would have been on while I read.
Oh, I forgot to mention that unlike W_10_00 and s_vamp, I do rewatch anime a lot. It wouldn't be possible to count how often I've watched the *sniffle* two seasons of KKM I own, since they're on the ipod, but I've watched Junjou through at least 3 times and I only bought it in May. And I would love to rewatch FY, Hanadan and Marmalade Boy, but I can no longer tolerate video tapes.
Maybe I'm putting off work by answering these comments, or maybe I'm taking advantage of lj workingcollarnojutsuJuly 28 2011, 19:50:06 UTC
Marmalade boy can still be had on DVD for pretty cheap....
Passive video for me is something I don't care about at all.Just because I want to make myself clear (because I don't want it confused with the parameters of the question, which is basically when I am so low that I want to be 98% passive on the couch -- the other 2% being that I might have to read the subtitles, hurrr): I almost NEVER have the tv on "for noise" in that sense of passive TV. Actually I can't stand it when there is a TV on all time. (It's one of the things that honestly keeps me from trying to move in with someone; it would drive me INSANE if someone needed a TV on every waking moment they were in the house.) I mean, sure, I'll put some movies on as background sometimes when involved in a huge project in a small localized space (like my all-night sewing marathons or cleaning out the closet), but of course I do stop and watch scenes I enjoy plenty then too. :P But I am also more likely to put on music instead, but movies do come in handy for this stuff on

This is exactly why the series will never be more than average entertainment to me. I appreciate the humor, but it's just not romantic.
