They did explain this... the whole point of being allowed to shop in duty-free is that all items in that area have been "security cleared"; i.e., you can't buy enough stuff there to be able to make a bomb or other terror-inflicting device.
Allowing only the basics on board was purely an idea to speed up the process of bag-checking. I read a report that all staff at airports, including pilots, air hosts/esses, shop staff etc also go through rigorous checks and in the case of one pilot, even had his lunch and car keys confiscated.
The only glaring error seems to be that, in the case of pilots at least, staff still have the ability to use the aircraft as a terror bomb a la 9/11. so that's the only thing I'm worried about!
surely if you were flying any time during the suspected attacks would have been taking place, you would have been pretty pissed off if despite the warnings, tip offs etc no extra security was added? Its not a case of having say, security cameras in a shop in case of a gun buglary, worst case senario a few people get shot...we have already scene a 'worst case scenario' involving planes in the hands of terrorists, and I fear they could actually do much worse if given half the chance, which is what these security measures are there to try and avoid.
Just because the general public welcome the security procedures put in place to ensure their safety from a genuine and real threat, dopes not necessarily mean they will be so blase as to blindly accept other measures. I would like to credit these people with more sense.
Surely the people who object to such security measures have soemthing to hide?
Well if we're going to get into the World Trade Center attacks I'm just gonna go out and say that the American government have to be at least partly responsible for them having trained, armed and funded Bin Laden and his men (who everyone seems to have forgotten about now no one can find him
