You can see if your library has 'Worms Eat My Garbage", by Mary Appelhof. It is always checked out in the Lexington Library system whenever I bother to look (darn it!). I've got my own worm colony living in embedded 5-gallon buckets (w/ a lid) since April in my garage. They have grown fat and multiplied... doing a nice job with the composting effort as I throw in the occasional banana peel. They would be just as non-conversational as your other pets, but their poop would be useful and they don't need nearly as much attention. ;)
I don't know if you have any sunny, patio space, but if you do, next spring I am going to convince you to grow something (that you can't easily kill). I've not paid much attention to my basil and it has done well, so that may be a prime candidate for you. :)

I'm currently reading White Noise by Don DeLillo. I know NPR recommended DeLillo and then my new favorite songwriter (Rhett Miller) had "read it in DeLillo" as one of his lyrics, and then I noticed we had somehow acquired one of his books... weird, huh? It's from 1985 so your library might have it.
NPR also has this series called "You Must Read This" and one of them was for a book called The Woman In White which sounded really good. We downloaded it from Audible and plan to listen during our trip this weekend. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5432412 I find NPR is a good place to get book recommendations. Also, have you been to www.metacritic.com?
