Summary: Jensen's socially awkward. But he likes someone. So he'll do what he can, even if it means flirting, to get Jared to like him back.
Disclaimer: These gorgeous boys aren’t mine, no matter how much I wish they were. They belong to themselves and each other and this isn’t true, probably.
A/N: This is for the_milky_way’s birthday. She told me she’d love to see some awkward flirting, maybe a misunderstanding? Maybe even in high school? Thanks as always go to matalinolukaret without whom this story would never have happened. So Dee, this one’s from the both of us! ♥

Jensen’s smart, yes, but not smart in any real way that matters.

He can get straight A's because he loves to read and study (yes, he's weird, he's been told enough), but he can’t fully interact with anyone.

He's socially awkward as his big brother likes to point out. Jensen can't even hit him properly because his mom will see. But Josh is a douche so Jensen plots to get him in trouble later. And because he's just that smart, no one believes Josh when he protests his innocence. He's smart, but he's not a saint.

Nobody's perfect after all.

So his biggest challenge to his social awkwardness is trying to let the person of his affection know he likes them. He's never really liked someone enough to try the social convention that is flirting, and gender hasn't even been an issue either. He's a hormonal 16-year-old boy, it doesn't really matter. Boys are just as attractive as girls in his eyes. But one boy in particular has been more attractive than others, to Jensen at least.

Jared Padalecki.

He's known the guy since middle school. Jared was scrawny, tall and long limbed and clumsy as anything. But somehow, over the summer, he grew in this beautiful boy. His eyes sparkle mischievously, he has dimples when he smiles, and he totally grew into his gangly frame.

He doesn't admit it to anyone, he can barely admit it to himself, but after the first day of school, he woke up almost every morning to sticky sheets and dreams of him and Jared in some stupid fairy tale.

One night it was Pride and Prejudice, except Jensen wasn't Mr. Darcy, he was Elizabeth, and the fact that he was the girl didn't make him a happy camper.

Another night he was Juliet to Jared's Romeo. He normally wouldn't mind dreaming of such things, loving literature and all, but having him in the role of the girl just makes him upset. Well, that and the suicide.

Because of his social awkwardness, and his bookish tendencies, he tries to find something that will help his endeavor. Matt Bomer, Jensen's best friend (which in all honesty, he’s still not quite sure how it happened) and fellow geek, mocks him relentlessly once he figures out Jensen is hopelessly infatuated with Jared. He tends to sing 'Jared and Jensen sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G.' Jensen kicks him in the shin every time Matt starts, and Matt's bruises have apparently taught him to just hum the music instead.

But Matt, awesome friend that he is, brings a book entitled The Complete Idiot's Guide to Being Sexy to Jensen's place one day when they're supposed to be studying.

"Matt, how am I supposed to flirt if I don't even know if the dude likes boys?"

"Clearly, Jensen, you're blind."

"I am when my glasses are off,” Jensen quips.

"Then your glasses must be off all the time if you can't even tell where Jared's gaze lands. He appreciates men just as much if not more than the girls."

“I don't think you're truly omnipresent to be so sure of that, Matt."

"Stop using big words, it's annoying."

"Anything to annoy you. You know that’s what I live for."

Matt rolls his eyes and gets back to his studying while Jensen cracks open the cover of the book, some tips might not hurt after all. There are tips on sexy music to buy, sexy clothes to wear, and how to make sex even sexier. Jensen's not sure he's at that point yet. He surreptitiously folds the corner over for future reference.

Just in case. Not that Matt needs to know.

The next day he starts putting his plan into action. He bumps into Jared as much as he can, which is easy given they have a couple of classes together. He tries to laugh at Jared's jokes, and jerks his head a little since he doesn't have the long hair to flick over his shoulder. Jared just looks at him weirdly and asks if he's having issues with his neck or something.

He attempts something a bit less subtle and finds every excuse possible to touch Jared. A slap on the shoulder, a high five when they get their grades back, leaning over him when Jensen asks for help on his technology project. Jared seems to flinch away from him, muttering something about it tickling and being so sensitive to touch. It doesn't really boost Jensen's confidence.

He starts wearing the new cologne his mom bought him for his birthday and Jared just sneezes every time Jensen is within four feet.

Jensen's at the end of his rope at this point and isn't sure if Jared's interested in him at all.

Matt, best friend that he is, is super supportive and tries to make excuses about everything Jared does, but Jensen really doesn't want to get his hopes up any more. It’s clear that Jared doesn't see Jensen anymore than as the creepy classmate. But Matt convinces Jensen to try one more avenue. Texting.

Matt calls it sexting, of course.

Jensen threatens for payback, of course.

He uses the excuse that since Jared is the technology geek and all, texting should be right up his avenue. Jensen got Jared's number when he needed help with the technology project, so it's not like he has to ask around for it. It's actually a good thing Jared gave it to him, no questions asked. Even if it was for a real reason. So Jensen starts small.

Hey Jared, how's your day?

Jared responds almost instantaneously which is either a good sign or a sign that Jared is attached to his phone.

Hey Jensen. Pretty boring. You?

It's pretty bland conversation, and it dies a little after that, but the interaction gave Jensen some hope.

So when he sees something technologic that he knows Jared would like, Jensen shoots him a text.

Did you see the new nanos Apple is coming out with? I'm kinda sad I just bought mine a month ago.

Yeah, totally! The multi-touch feature is wicked cool. U can tap & swipe & move stuff w/ ur fingers. The rechargeable lithium ion batt is also a nice touch. Shaking the nano also makes it shuffle, I love that.

Another text comes within seconds.

You know because I dance like a complete spaz, so my body shaking changes the song too.

The first text made Jensen's eyes cross, because he wishes he was that into technology, But the second one, well, that one just makes Jensen smile like a dork. He can totally picture Jared dancing around in his room and the song just changing and Jared moving to that beat instead.

Jensen bites his lip. He's totally gone for this guy.

*

Jared likes computers. He can fix them, build them, and can figure out what's wrong with them. They're- after you learn all the parts and how they work- simple.

He likes simple.

So the Jensen thing throws him for a loop. That's as far from simple as you can get. First he thinks the guy is just being friendly, which Jared is more than okay with. He's harbored a crush on the guy since last year, but his geekish tendencies and enthusiasm for all things technology related tend to scare people away.

Jared keeps to himself most of the time, even if he's bursting at the seams about the new harddrive or satellite NASA is sending into space or his new Android platform phone. People just smile placatingly at him and Jared blushes and mumbles something and turns away.

Jensen, though, he's being genuinely nice and listening to Jared spout off about their technology project like he's actually interested.

He seems to be everywhere Jared is, too. It's almost unnerving if Jared didn't like seeing the guy so much. Jensen seems to be touching him all the time too, and Jared just gets extremely nervous and pulls away. He saw a sheen of hurt in Jensen's eyes, he thinks, but it's gone in an instant and Jared figures he was mistaken.

And Jared thinks that the cologne Jensen wore was nice, it was just unfortunate that he was allergic to it.

It doesn't really make sense to him that Jensen seems to be making such an effort.

Then the texts start.

Almost every day, they text about something as mundane as the weather, or the new Apple nano, or the sandwich made by God Jensen seems to be having.

So when Jared's talking to Aldis, one of his friends in the computer club, he's surprised when the other boy whistles.

"Boy is sweet on you."

"What?"

"He's totally crushing on you, man," Aldis tells him.

"No, he's not. He's just being nice. Isn't he?"

"Jared, you can't be that dumb. He's flirting. He's finding any excuse to see you, he's touching you all the time, and he tried to smell good for you. He even texts you every day! That's not just nice, Jared, that's being totally gone for you.”

Jared thinks about this, because this? This changes everything.

He totally doesn't believe Aldis, so he does what he usually does when he's confused about something: he googles it. He finds flirting on Answers.com and starts to read, his mouth falling open as he does so. Almost everything on that list, Jensen's been doing.

Jared is an idiot.

The next day at school, Jensen's sitting close enough for their thighs to brush at lunch, and Jared decides to hell with it. Aldis is sitting across from him, mouthing make a move already! and Matt, Jensen's friend, seems to be nudging Jensen too.

"Jensen?"

"Yeah, Jay?" Jensen asks, looking over at him.

Their eyes meet and Jared is struck by how gorgeous Jensen is. His eyes are grass green with golden flecks that seem so bright in the cafeteria lights. There's a faint dusting of freckles across his nose and cheeks that Jared wants to map with his fingers. And his lips are curving up in a small smile. It's different than Jensen's normal smile, almost like it's reserved for only Jared. And seriously, Jared fails so much at life for not even noticing.

"I-uh," Jared starts, but his confidence falters. Aldis groans and facepalms. Ok, time to just go for it. "Do you want to go out with me?"

Jensen's eyes widen, like he wasn't expecting that.

"Yeah," he says quickly, without hesitation.

"I, uh, mean," Jensen stutters but Jared's grinning huge and the blush Jensen has going is seriously adorable. Jared quickly leans in and presses a kiss to the tip of Jensen's nose, not even caring who sees. Jensen scrunches it in response and that might be one of Jensen's cutest faces.

He has a feeling they are going to be that couple. The sappy, PDA loving couple.

But he really doesn't care.
