I too, have a deep-rooted fear of the dentist. I finally went almost a year ago, after not having been for several years. I think part of my fear was having to go to someone new - I went to the same dentist growing up, and felt "comfortable" with him and his office. As comforting as having your mouth prodded can be, anyways.

needless to say, "new dentist" said I had a small cavity in between my teeth, that didn't need to be filled then, but probably would be the next time. Now it's been 10 months, and I still haven't made new appointments for Mark and I. I've resolved to do it after the first of the year. But the ominous feeling of KNOWING I have a cavity doesn't help. Plus, between my teeth? What the hell is that, I've never had a cavity between teeth. Ah, the fear of the unknown.

i have a metal bar too!... i work at my dad's dental office, and there are a lot of people who are deathly afraid of getting dental work. For this reason, my dad is certified to put people under sedation for common dental procedures. you'd be amazed at how many people he has to do this for (maybe i'm just amazed since i've never been afraid of the dentist who just happens to be my dad- i'd probably be scared too if it was someone else). a lot of dentists do this now, so if you need to have dental work that could be an option.. that way you have nothing to be afraid of. and i think lots of dental insurances cover it now. yeah, so that's my nagging of you to go to the dentist.
